City Guide for Susanville, CA

Susanville is many things: an old mining town, a river town, a prison town, and a pioneer town. It's a strange sort of madness about 90 miles from the even stranger and madder little city of Reno, and renting around here will take some savvy local knowledge. That's where we come in.

Don't let the local prison scare you. Outside the walls of the correctional center, you will find a perfectly nice little community with plenty of families, as well as a large population of young and restless 20-somethings who enjoy the outdoors life as well as the occasional drive down "blood alley" (395) to Reno. Downtown looks like an old Main Street right out of the history books, with large wooden signs hanging off old buildings, and some great local shops and restaurants. Just outside the city limits, you will find hundreds of miles of unharnessed nature, with mountains, forests, high desert, and nearby lakes to let your soul bask in the glory of the great outdoors. It's a perfect location for any modern-day mountain man or desert-wanderer, and the price tag is easily affordable. Rental rates start at $450 for cheap apartments in old remodeled houses. Small, brick apartment buildings house spacious one to three-bedroom apartments in the $500 - $900 range. There are some really nice duplexes for rent around town for less than a grand. And, rental homes vary greatly, from tiny one and two-bedroom houses for rent in the $500 - $700 range, to nice, big ranch homes in the $800 - $1,500 range.

You're not going to see a lot of luxury amenities around these parts. A few apartments feature the more practical amenities, such as parking and laundry facilities. Some rental properties come with BBQ areas and playgrounds. The most coveted amenities, however, are the views. Mountain views, river views, and lake views will inspire you to get your butt out the door each day and enjoy the true value of this part of California: the great outdoors.

As far as pets are concerned, the attitude seems to be that pets = damage. Few rental properties are cat friendly, much less dog friendly. However, you can find a couple of pet friendly apartments and other rentals with enough legwork. So, if you're bringing along your furry family members, be sure to start searching for that pet friendly pad long before the big move.

This has got to be one of the prettiest prison cities around, and as long as you're not an incarcerated criminal you will find the city to be more than welcoming. So, enjoy your new life on the Susan River and be sure to explore all the natural surroundings that await you. Best of luck!

What to keep in mind when looking for pet friendly apartments in Susanville, CA

Renting pet-friendly apartments in Susanville should offer peace of mind and convenience for our furry friends. It’s crucial to find an apartment that’ll work for both you and your pet. Before signing a pet-friendly apartment, take your time to study the layout and ask plenty of questions.

Some pet-friendly apartments in Susanville may request a pet deposit or only accept certain dog breeds. You should also consider if the floors are hardwood or carpeted. Hardwood may be easier to clean-up fur and a mess but could mean your neighbors below hear the tapping of your dog running past. An outdoor balcony can also be ideal for a pet who needs some fresh air.

Consider the neighborhood of any pet-friendly apartments in Susanville. Are they near a dog park or a vet? You should also research the rates of dog walkers in your area. It may be less expensive to move to a nearby neighborhood with a lower pet deposit, a better layout for your pet, and cheaper services.
