The original inhabitants of the area were the Shoshone Indians, who camped and drank water in this spot. Next came the Thompson family looking for gold. They made the area a town, and South El Monte, which officially incorporated in 1958, has grown steadily ever since. El Monte has its own attractions and amenities. And even better, it offers easy access to Los Angeles, so residents can commute for work and play in the big city, but enjoy some quiet suburban living when they decide to stay at home.

Living in South El Monte
Sure, many people will want to drive into Los Angeles for all the culture, businesses, and recreation opportunities there, and this is a convenient drive of less than thirty minutes on Highway 60. You'll want to have a car to get there -- public transportation is not a strong suit heading into the big city from this community.
But there's plenty for you to do right in El Monte to keep you entertained and occupied, too. The town is especially great for history buffs. It's home to an American Military Museum, where you can learn about the history of the military. It's also the site of the El Monte Museum of History, which educates visitors about local history and native artifacts.
For people who like spending time outdoors, the town is home to some really great parks. Dean Shively Park is a local favorite, as is New Temple Park. The city offers some amazing public recreational facilities. There is a golf course, an indoor boxing ring, basketball courts, swimming pools, tennis courts -- and more! The town has a recreation center that also organizes sports leagues. There are summer music concerts, too.
