The town of Atherton loves its trees. Even though it is home to some of the biggest, most gorgeous homes in the country, pristine landscaping and all, the six miles of this California community is known for its marvelous white oaks, redwoods, cedars, pines, bays, and other ornamental species of trees.
Atherton has always been a must-see stop along the way to sunny San Francisco, even before it was the glorious town we know today. In 1866, when Atherton was known as Fair Oaks, it was a crucial stop along the Southern Pacific Railroad line connecting San Francisco with San Jose.
