South Boston is located within Halifax County, Virginia. With a population of about 8,142 residents, it's a great place to experience small town living. However, if leaving the big city gives you culture shock, rest assured that you are only two hours away from several of them. The town was originally called Boyds Ferry, until someone with a strong affection for Massachusetts changed the name to South Boston. What started as a railroad depot eventually grew into a tobacco-growing haven. By the beginning of the 20th century, it was the second largest tobacco market in the country and a home to several of the large cigarette companies. The numerous tobacco lawsuits of the 1990s slowed South Boston's booming tobacco industry, causing major changes in the town's economy, but a loss for the tobacco companies was a cultural gain for the good people of South Boston. The town council stepped in to rehab the old tobacco buildings, which now house a performing arts center, an art gallery and impressive banquet facilities. With one of the lowest crime rates in Virginia, you can feel safe and secure in the town that declares it is, "proud of its past, comfortable with its present and confident in its future."
If you are planning a move, begin searching for apartment homes in South Boston well in advance of your moving date. Though the rental inventory is adequate for the town's size, your selection will be better if you allow yourself extra time.

The town offers a variety of old and new apartment complexes, with one and two bedrooms apartments for rent. If your family needs a little more room, there are even several communities offering three-bedroom units. How's your furniture holding up? If its not fit to make the move, or your move is just a temporary one, check out some of the furnished apartments throughout the city. The downtown district offers newly renovated rental apartments, constructed in the highly sought after loft industrial style. Some are even outfitted with high-end amenities, like granite countertops and hardwood floors. If these extras don't fall within your budget, there are also income restricted loft rental homes that were built to provide residents with affordable housing. These have income limitations, though, so be sure to call ahead of time to make sure you fall under the threshold. Ironically, you may make too much money to rent an apartment there.
South Boston offers a variety of neighborhoods. You can choose to be downtown and close to shops and restaurants, or you may prefer a more rural setting among the badgers, and possums and deer. Oh my!
Cluster Springs: This relatively new community with rural charm boasts large acreage allows you to see your neighbors, but be far enough away not to hear their nocturnal activities. New construction is still available in this beautiful subdivision.
Hickory Ridge: Construction opportunities are available in this newly developed community. There are even some waterfront lots available.
Brentwood: Brentwood is an established family-friendly community with custom-built homes nestled among the wooded areas. Most of the houses here were built within the last 20 years.
South Boston is filled with recreational activities for your enjoyment. The World of Sports is a huge entertainment complex with something to please every member of your family. Theaters, a skating rink and even a 30-lane bowling alley are housed in the facility. If you can't find something to do in the World of Sports, you just don't like fun. But maybe your idea of fun is a theatrical show. In that case, the Halifax County Little Theater provides area actors with an outlet by producing community plays through out the year. The organization loves the kids, offering scholarships and field trips to expose them to arts.
Head downtown for festivals and events throughout the year. Jazz up your summer nights with outdoor concerts in Constitution Square.
