Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, was originally named Westdale after the notorious painter Benjamin West. When Swarthmore college was developed, the town changed its name.
Swarthmore is tethered to Philadelphia, meaning you can get a famous cheesesteak almost any time you like. While its proximity to the home of the Liberty Bell is a definite plus, Swarthmore has a number of other things to offer its approximately 6,000 residents. The eponymous college was established in 1864, and serves more than 1,500 liberal arts students today, as well as the community. Swarthmore residents enjoy a number of cultural activities put on by the private liberal arts college, such as green roof walking tours and art exhibitions. But don't you dare write this borough off as just another college town; Swarthmore boasts myriad restaurants, businesses, and community events -- including everything from road cycling classes and home tours. If you're looking for a sweet small town near a big city chock-full of history, Swarthmore is the place for you. View Swarthmore City Guide
Balconies are a coveted amenity for many renters looking for high-rise views and opportunities for fresh air. However, you should keep in mind that balconies often come with restrictions.
Before signing a lease, ask about how many people can be on the balcony at once. Also, ask about whether you’re allowed to store a bike or other items.
You’ll also want to know about any maintenance schedules. Using your balcony as storage could result in fines and intervention from your property management.
Keep in mind that not all balconies are created equally. You may discover the views of the parking area are less than optimal or reduce your overall privacy.
Balconies can also get messy with debris, foliage, dirt, and pollen depending on your location. Renters are typically responsible for any clean-up and basic balcony upkeep.
Regardless of the issues to keep in mind, balconies are usually a big win for Swarthmore renters. Ask about apartments on higher floors for the best views.
