The city is situated around the Mohawk River, with some of the city on the south bank and most of it on the north bank. The Eerie Canal led to a major economic boom in the mid-1800s, when the town became a carpet production center. Today, the city does many more things than produce carpet, and it's a city with lovely historic buildings, great entertainment options and activities, and easy access to nearby Schenectady.

This is the best place to look for apartments to rent - you'll probably be able to find some in your price range. You can find Amsterdam's main drag in the central part of town: Market St. On Market St., you can find a whole host of chain restaurants, local mom and pop shops, and big box stores (in addition to tons more!).

Northern Amsterdam: This area is a lot like Southern Amsterdam. What can we say? This is just a pretty lovely town. One of the area's main highlights is the Amsterdam Golf Course. Living in Amsterdam

If you've chosen to live in Amsterdam, get ready for a really nice life. Winters can be cold there, but the town affords safe, quiet living with easy access to big cities nearby. Transportation is easy in Amsterdam. Most people have cars to get around, but Amsterdam has its own Amtrak station that can get you all the way up to Niagara Falls or all the way down to New York City.

If you want to stay in town for entertainment, you can enjoy a whole slew of buildings on the National Register of Historic Places to Enjoy. The city also has an excellent public golf course -- so get ready for a round!
