Nice, huh! Well, why is all this relevant? Yep, you guessed it, Holyfield was born in Atmore.
Atmore is situated in Escambia County in Alabama and boasts the title of an Alabama Community of Excellence. There are 10,194 people living in Atmore, according to the 2010 census, across a total area of 8.4 square miles. The city lies right down on the southern edge of the state, with the western region of Florida just at its doorstep. In fact, anyone living in the south of the city could walk right across the border literally off their front porch! The two nearest major cities are Mobile, roughly 40 miles to the southwest in Alabama, and Pensacola, a little further to the south on the Florida coast. The climate in the city is classified as humid subtropical, meaning that summers grow hot and humid and winters usually become cool to mild. So, you'll see plenty of sunshine, but not a great deal of snow!
Moving to Atmore
OK, so let's think about what you'll need for a successful move to Atmore. First off, you need to look at your budget and your living needs. We're talking how many rooms you need, what sort of housing you're looking for, whether you want a garden, etc. Then it's important to ensure that you get accepted for your new place when you put in an offer. Being employed will help enormously, but you'll also need references and other bits and pieces -- your ID, a credit check and a nice fat security deposit.
**The Property Market
**
First things first. Renters need to be aware that about a third of the properties in Atmore are renter occupied. This isn't the worst, but it's not the best either. The good news? Well, the vacancy rate is way above the national average, so there should be plenty of places on the market for you to check out.
So, what are you looking for? Well, if you want a house rental then you've come to the right place, because almost three quarters of available housing comes in the form of single-family detached homes. If you want to rent an apartment in Atmore, however, things aren't so rosy, with only about a fifth of housing in the form of apartment complexes and high rises. Just don't expect to see a whole host of all-bills-paid apartments lining the streets, because they're going to be harder to find. In addition, if you want to a studio apartment, you'll be looking for a needle in a haystack, because they're extremely rare in the city.
Neighborhoods in Atmore
Atmore only has a handful of neighborhoods to choose from, but it's worth taking a look around the city to see where you might want to live before you get your realtor dragging you to all corners. The Walk Score isn't bad at all, at 69, so this is good if you manage to find somewhere centrally located. For apartment seekers, this is a bonus, because more complexes will be central, rather than out of the downtown area.
City Center: This is the place to start if you're looking for an apartment. There's a small park in the south called Tom Byrne Park, as well as Atmore Community Hospital and Atmore Municipal Airport.
Route 31 / Caffey Lane: The north of Main Street runs up through here, so you'll find plenty of amenities in the neighborhood. Places like Outback Seafood Shack for dinner and Chick-A-Dee for a drink are great.
Freemanville / Nokomis: Route 65 runs along the northern edge of this neighborhood, providing easy access through the state and beyond. If you like your golf, then you'll love that Atmore Country Club is here.

These include Mayfest in May, A Taste of the South in September, William Station Day in October and, of course, an annual Christmas celebration as well.
Aside from this, any keen golfers will enjoy the beautiful nine-hole course at Atmore Country Club, while nearby woods and rivers allow plenty of opportunity for hunting, fishing and other water-based fun.
