There's tons of history, in addition to its cultural history, too. And one of the best historic spots is the Houser-Conklin House. Built in 1775, this interesting gable roof and sandstone home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It has withstood many years of renovations around it, and a number of different individuals owning the land on which it stands.
But if you want to focus on what's actually happening today, Monsey is best known for its extremely walkable arts-oriented community. Small in size but not in culture, Money magazine called the area the best place in New York State to settle down. This is due to its great mix of arts and leisure activities, strong business community, and plenty of open space and parks.
Monsey Glen County Park is quite popular -- there are several sandstone caves where a number of ancient American artifacts have been discovered. They are now on display at the Trailside Museum at Bear Mountain. Steps carved into rock and leading to a stone platform are also a site of great interest. You can also take yourself out to the ball game at Provident Bank Park, the home field of the Rockland Boulders team. Other community events are also held here, from a summer concert series to family holiday events.
