From the late 1800s through about 1950, 90 percent of all leather gloves made in the U.S. were put together in and around the appropriately named city of Gloversville. Outsourcing for cheap labor eventually killed that, and the city had to diversify. But if the glove fits... move there!
The loss of a major industry left a ghost town of many previously thriving communities. Through a mix of luck, location and internal fortitude, the city got past the devastating departure of glove-making. Located in Fulton County in Upstate New York's Mohawk Valley, Gloversville is about a 30-minute drive from Albany. Being close to the Adirondack Mountains has helped re-define the town as a tourist base camp of sorts for people exploring the beautiful mountain country just to the north.
