National study of renter’s satisfaction with their cities and states
Apartment List has released results for Salem from the second annual Apartment List Renter Satisfaction Survey. The survey, which drew on responses from over 30,000 renters, provides insight into what states and cities must do to meet the needs of the 105 million American renters nationwide.
“Salem renters seem generally satisfied with their city,” says Andrew Woo, Director of Data Science at Apartment List. “They gave average scores to many categories.”
Key findings in Salem include the following:
















Southeast Salem offers family-friendly living with a mix of established neighborhoods and newer developments. Rental homes typically include more yard space and square footage than similarly priced options closer to downtown or the Capitol area. The neighborhood provides good access to both I-5 connections and Lancaster Drive shopping corridors, creating practical convenience for households seeking suburban atmosphere while maintaining reasonable commutes to Salem employment centers.
Faye Wright features established homes with larger yards in southern Salem. Rental properties typically include mid-century architecture with more outdoor space than newer developments at similar price points. While the area provides excellent access to both downtown Salem employment and shopping along Commercial Street, some streets lack sidewalks despite the otherwise family-friendly atmosphere. Most suitable for households seeking established neighborhoods with mature landscaping who prioritize practical amenities and reasonable commutes over walkable dining options or contemporary design trends more common in Portland's rapidly evolving neighborhoods.
Morningside combines hillside views with family-friendly streets in southern Salem. Rental homes typically feature larger lots than downtown properties with views toward the Willamette Valley from many locations. The neighborhood provides excellent access to both Willamette University and shopping along Commercial Street, creating a balance between residential tranquility and urban amenities unusual for Oregon's capital city.
