The charming suburban town of Spencer is located in Worcester County, Massachusetts. It was first settled in 1717, and 36 years later the area split from Leicester to be incorporated into its own town. It fittingly named itself after its governor at the time, Spencer Phipps. Located halfway between Boston and Springfield, Spencer is growing in size that is quite considerable for a small town. In its early days Spencer was home to the famous Howe family of inventors, which boasts the father of the modern sewing machine among other incredible innovators.
The pricing of property rentals in Spencer is considered quite reasonable by area locals, as it is just west of Worcester. You will have your pick of rental types in Spencer -- everything from medium-sized houses to studio apartment rentals can be found here, as well as month-to-month lease agreements for the commitment shy. Spencer aims to please!
Although Spencer prides itself on its small-town values, you will still need to bring some documents with you on your apartment hunt to prove that you will be a good tenant. Make sure to have copies of your identification, bank statements, credit history, and don't forget your checkbook!
Depending on your preferences and tastes, you may choose to live in one of the below neighborhoods once you arrive in Spencer. Check out the amenities in each before settling on a home.
Town Center: This area is smack dab in the middle of town and encompasses the historic district. If you're looking for a unique apartment to rent in Spencer, you may find it here in the bounty of 18th and 19th century buildings that still stand today. In fact, most of the buildings were built no later than 1940, so if you like historical architecture, you're in for a treat! Rentals are easier to find in Town Center than in the other Spencer neighborhoods, and there are small apartment buildings aplenty.
Camp Neyati and Hillsville: These two neighborhoods incorporate the more rural areas to the north and south of the Town Center. The majority of the buildings here were constructed post-1970, so rentals here will be more modern than in the Town Center. If you are specifically looking for house rentals in Spencer, you may want to start your search here. Average rental prices are close to 60 percent less than most Massachusetts neighborhoods, so renting in Camp Neyati or Hillsville will be a bargain!
If you are a nature enthusiast, Spencer will astound you. Browning Pond -- an 89-acre body of water that just might be the largest "pond" you've ever seen -- is available for boating and fishing recreation. If you stick to the northern shore, you may even catch a yellow perch or bullhead worthy of stuffing and mounting above your fireplace. If you've never been to Spencer, keep in mind that it is quite hilly -- you may need to stop to catch your breath (or admire the view) while you're walking around.
Spencer also has plenty going on in and around town if you're not the outdoorsy type. The Richard Sugden Library provides historical programs, art classes, and book discussion clubs. If you visit Town Center, you can grab a slice of pizza and visit any of the numerous antique and specialty shops on foot. A fun fact about Town Center: if you parlez Francais, you'll be in good company. There are more French-speaking people living in Town Center than almost any other neighborhood in the country!
