Golden Oldie: Logansport is one of the oldest cities in the United States. The area that would become Logansport was originally settled in the mid 1820's by former U.S. Captain James Renick-Logan.

Thanks to its geographically-strategic position, Logansport became one of the primary routes within and through the state of Indiana. The Michigan Road, one of the first roads constructed in Indiana, passed through Logansport, and multiple railroad lines have always had Logansport as a stop on their routes. In addition, the Wabash and Erie Canal had a port in town. In the early 1900's, the Western Motor Company, known for developing the first four-cylinder engine, was located here. While the city itself is brimming with history, the size of this town is surprisingly small. According to the 2010 United States Census, Logansport had a population just over 18,000 in a total area of just under nine square miles.

Neighborhoods in Logansport

The majority of people living in Logansport are in the southwestern part of town. This is where most of the historical buildings and much of the commercial and cultural activity takes place. However, there are several neighborhoods in the outlying parts of town that are worth considering as well.

Downtown Logansport: This area is home to many historic buildings. Many of the homes in this part of town have been around since well before World War II. If you are interested in living in a classically Midwestern neighborhood, Downtown Logansport is absolutely worth checking out.

Onward: This community is located in the eastern part of town and was built up much later than downtown. The majority of homes here were built between the 1970's and 1990's, and there is a genuine rural aspect to this neighborhood.

Meta and Twelve Mile: This neighborhood occupies the northeastern part of Logansport and has an interesting mix of pre-World War II homes and homes built in the latter part of the 20th century. Although there are several apartment complexes in this part of town, the majority of real estate consists of single-family homes.

Leases Corner: Located in the northwestern part of Logansport, Leases Corner was built up primarily during the 1950's and is almost exclusively single-family homes that are three bedrooms or larger.

Living in Logansport

Logansport is a part of the Preserve America Community program, a national program which identifies and rewards cities that actively work to protect its historical heritage and use that heritage to bolster the local economy. As a result, Logansport is full of historic buildings that would excite anyone even remotely interested in early 20th-century American history.

In addition to its emphasis on historic sites, Logansport has a robust cultural community. The McHale Performing Arts Center is one of the most modern and well-equipped auditoriums in Indiana. Along with hosting a number of music and theatrical productions throughout the year, the auditorium hosts a popular annual Thanksgiving musical, which is a city highlight.

The Logansport Art Association was founded in 1911 and is the oldest such organization in the state of Indiana. They sponsor art competitions, art classes and several other events throughout the year. The biggest and most popular is the annual Art on the Avenue, an art festival that takes place every September.
