North Chicago sounds like it would be the north side of the city of Chicago, but it’s actually a suburb so far north that it’s almost in Wisconsin. North Chicago is in Lake County, and it’s the home of the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. Like other suburbs in the greater Chicagoland area, North Chicago still provides great access to the rest of the huge variety of big-city things the area has to offer. You’ll never have to get bored when you’re only 30 miles away from Chicago, or just as little as a few feet away from gorgeous Lake Michigan.

Moving to North Chicago

Even though North Chicago is in the normally pricey Lake County region of Chicagoland, you’re in luck if you need to find more affordable housing here.  Although almost all of Chicago is expensive, North Chicago is comparatively more reasonable. You have lots of options. Short-term housing and apartment rental is easier to find here than average.

Apartment complexes in North Chicago may be more likely to offer options like all bills paid, rentals to people with bad credit and to overlook other obstacles that may make it harder to find viable rental options.

Life in North Chicago

Although travel within North Chicago is definitely easier with a car and the town isn’t walkable, the Metra train system has a Union Pacific/North Line route that does connect North Chicago all the way from Waukegan down to the city of Chicago. With a little extra effort, public transportation here can still connect you to the rest of the whole Chicagoland area.

North Chicago won’t put you right in the middle of the action of the city of Chicago, but you’re close enough that you can always go for a visit and be there in an hour or less. If you need to be in the northern parts of the metropolitan area, North Chicago might be your new home!
