City Guide for Rio del Mar, CA

This Santa Cruz neighborhood does lack a body of water of the same name as you would expect. A small creek is all Rio Del Mar has in the way of water -- if you ignore the nearby Pacific Ocean, of course.

Rio Del Mar is adjacent to beautiful Seacliff State Beach, which isn't just a fun place to surf or swim. Tourists have visited the beach to see the remains of ship S.S. Palo Alto, which once served at war and returned home to act as a carnival space before the company went out of business. The S.S. Palo Alto is now beached and broken. However, the rental houses in Rio Del Mar are far from broken down. Known locally as the "Rio Del Mar Flats," the area appeals to beach lovers and tourists, so it's easy to find month to month rental options in addition to even shorter rental periods. See more

What to keep in mind when looking for dog friendly apartments in Rio del Mar, CA

Finding an apartment in Rio del Mar that accepts your pet may not be easy, but it’s very possible. Keep in mind, most of the time you’ll have to pay a premium for bringing your dog along in your new apartment. Some apartments require you to pay monthly pet rent, others will ask for a non-refundable pet fee or a refundable pet deposit.

While landlords and property management companies have varying pet policies, most of them limit the number of dogs you can bring to your apartment and include breed and weight restrictions.

If your pet falls under some of the restrictions outlined in the pet policy, it’s still worth asking the landlord if they can make an exception for your dog. Preparing a pet resume ahead of time could help you build the case for your furry friend. Make sure to include information on behavioral training your dog went through over the years and proof of vaccinations. If you can, include references from your former landlord and/or neighbors.
