Originally, travelers from as far away as Virginia, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee passed through the Whitehouse area on their way to San Antonio to help Texas defend the Alamo. Equidistant to the city of Tyler (seven miles to the north) and the city of Troupe (seven miles to the south), the city of Whitehouse is located in Smith County and considered a part of the Tyler Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. Even though Whitehouse was founded as far back as 1845, it was not actually incorporated into a city until 1953 -- the city may even be younger than you! The main industry during that period was farming and agriculture with crops of cotton, peach orchards, tomatoes, watermelons and a variety of vegetables.
