Founded in 1897 by Dutch settlers, Nederland translates to "Lowland" in Dutch. The Dutch settlers were given the territory of Nederland as repayment for funding the Kansas City Southern railroad. To this day, Nederland remains an outlier in Texas with many of the street names maintaining their English and Dutch roots. At first, Nederland was an economic powerhouse in the community because of their rice and dairy farming. However, the discovery of oil in 1901 has led to a transformation of the economy in this Texas town.
