Apartment List was founded in 2011, after CEO & Founder John Kobs’ personal struggle to find an apartment. Kobs had recently graduated from college, left his home in Ohio, and moved to New York where he had the “worst 24-hour apartment search in history”. From being targeted by scammers, experiencing a classic bait-and-switch, and touring apartments that were occupied by squatters, Kobs wasn’t happy.
Rather than dwelling on this horrible experience, Kobs channeled his energy into creating a solution. He launched Apartment List with the intention of “helping renters find a home they love”.
This mission still stands true today.
Since the early days, we’ve explored different solutions to ensure that both renters and property management companies have the best experience. And in 2014, we took to market a solution that closely aligned our business goals with our clients. Since then, we’ve operated on a pay-per-lease model. Apartment List’s pay-per-lease model is a success-based billing method that guarantees a return on investment for our clients. Simply put, we only get paid once the renter moves in. We had immediate success in our earlier years and today we continue to be the fastest-growing ILS. With nearly 30k communities active on our platform nationwide we’re able to match more renters with a place to call home. We also continue to build more unique integration features with the major core property management systems allowing us to streamline the lead-to-lease process for our clients. Most recently we implemented automated tour booking to help communities convert more leads to tours quicker! Between product innovation and our highly knowledgeable & dedicated sales team, we are shaking up the industry. Apartment List generates over 5M+ monthly views from renters, and we’re still investing in our growth! In early 2021, we raised $60M in Series D funding! Since then, we’ve spent our time and resources doubling our team to 250+ employees and targeting new markets.
