Lake St. Louis is just a scant 40 minute's drive from St. Louis, but here life is slower and more peaceful. Several notable people have called Lake St. Louis home (and some still do today), including musical artist Howard "Chingy" Bailey, Jr., Grammy winner Cornell "Nelly" Haynes, Jr. (his Lake St. Louis home was featured on MTV Cribs), Grammy winning musical producer Alonzo "Zo" Lee, Jr. and the winner of "Survivor Nicaragua," Jud "Fabio" Birza. Apparently, nicknames and juniors are popular here.

Moving to Lake St. Louis

Renters inside the Community Association zone generally pay higher rent than those who rent homes outside the covered area. This is so the property owners can recoup the substantial homeowners' association fees charged by the Community. However, these higher rates come with amenities like access to the 85-acre lake (one of two private lakes in the community), the country club, the marinas, several parks including picnic areas and playgrounds, an Olympic-size pool and children's pool, the nine-hole golf course and four tennis courts. Boating, fishing, skiing, sailing and swimming are all permitted in the large lake.

Lake St. Louis started out as a planned community, but in 2004 the area started booming with business and commercial growth. Eventually, there were lots of homes there outside the Lake St. Louis Community Association. The original planned community of Lake St. Louis doesn't have the cookie-cutter style homes seen in many such places. All of the homes are uniquely styled, so that the community looks like it developed naturally, as communities tend to do, and is its own neighborhood unto itself. This particular one is just between I-70 and I-64, giving it super easy access to St. Louis, as well as neighboring towns of Wentzville and O'Fallon. A search for apartments in the area yields plenty of results in these nearby towns. However, these cities are older and larger, and offer plenty of studio apartments, as well as two and three bedroom units and various types of apartment homes.

Life in Lake St. Louis

Other homes in the city aren't offered free access to these recreational facilities, but they still have lots to do. Two area malls, The Shoppes at Hawk Ridge and The Meadows at Lake St. Louis, provide lots of shopping, eating and fun stuff. The Shoppes is an 800,000-square foot mall that contains the most expensive Wal-Mart Supercenter ever built. It also has a Lowe's, White Castle, Steak & Shake and numerous other smaller shops and restaurants.

The Meadows at Lake St. Louis is a 64-acre open-air shopping center, featuring a Von Maur and many other upscale stores, boutiques and eateries. More development is planned at The Meadows in the coming years. Apartments for rent in the area are scarce; most of the available properties are rental homes.

The climate in Lake St. Louis is typical of western central Missouri. Rainfall usually amounts to about 40 inches per year, and snowfall often exceeds 16 inches per year. The temperatures are warmest in July, where the thermometer usually hits its peak around 90 degrees. The temperatures dip lowest in January, and 20 is the average low for this time of winter.

If you're looking for some restaurants, you'll find plenty in Lake St. Louis.
