Decatur, Indiana has a proud history, getting its name from Stephen Decatur, Jr, one of the captains of the original six frigates of the United States Navy after the Revolutionary War. Decatur is also home to Adams Memorial Hospital, which is one of the Top 100 Critical Access Hospitals in the United States, as named by the National Rural Health Association in 1991.
Decatur is anchored by Fort Wayne, IN which is 21 miles to the Northwest. Interestingly, it sits at a three way intersection of state and federal highways Route 224, Route 27 and Route 33. It is relatively small, but dense. All 9405 residents are packed into 5.9 square miles. Elm Tree Crossroads: This area is basically the suburbs in that you'll have more people closer together. There are both small and medium homes along with apartment complexes and high rises. You have a nice mixture of owners and renters here with good leisure activities including Cross Creek Gold Club, Hanna City Park and Camelot Carriage Rides.
City Center: This area is great for renters with apartment complexes and high rises. Also, the town's Hospital Heliport is in this region.
Living in Decatur
Although you'll need a car to get around to all of the fun stuff, Decatur won't bore you. For history buffs, Decatur makes theirs available through their active Historical Society. There are a number of good local (non-chain) restaurants available, such as West End Restaurant and Back 40 Junction Restaurant. And for those looking for a bit of a throwback to movie watching, there is even Arnold's Drive In. Decatur is a great place for renters to put down some roots!
