Plymouth is 2.22 square miles of awesome. Located midway between Detroit and Ann Arbor, Plymouth is the perfect compromise for people who just can't choose. Plymouth is the newer and more desirable half of the Plymouth-Livonia district. Plymouth wins big with its close location to some important roads in both the Detroit and Ann Arbor metro areas. The town has easy access to I-96, I-275 and the east-west Highway 14 taking you right into Ann Arbor.
If you want to live in Plymouth, you're in luck! Like most of the metro Detroit area, there are a lot of houses for rent, and cheap deals can be found on pretty nice housing. If you look for apartment homes for rent, you'll find a lot of choices in Plymouth.
When you want to move to Plymouth, you need to make sure you have all the good stuff that landlords like to see. Good references from your previous landlord, a clean -- or at least accurate -- credit report, check stubs and enough income to pay the bills should be enough to prove you'll be a good tenant.
You'll want to be honest with the landlord or property manager about any special situations you may have, too. Landlords are often more understanding than you would expect. Whether you need a pet-friendly apartment or to find a two-bedroom apartment for rent with bad credit, you just need to look around, be upfront and maybe even pay a few deposits.
Northwest: Some of the most budget-friendly housing can be found here, and it's great that you'll be so close to Hwy 14. What's not so great is that it's a mostly suburban residential area dominated by owner-occupied homes. If your heart is set on an apartment complex, you might have to search long and hard here.
Southwest: Rents -- much like this area in general -- vary greatly and run the gamut. You'll find larger owner-occupied homes, new construction and even townhouses in this area, along with some older apartments and mid-rise apartments. The Plymouth Township Park and golf courses in this neighborhood will keep you busy on the weekends.
Northeast: Commuters will love this area since it's where I-275, Hwy 14 and I-96 intersect. With a mix of renters and owners, finding a reasonably priced pad shouldn't be difficult here - just don't expect to score a month-to-month place.
Southeast: East of downtown is the best spot to find units that are all bills paid here. The further southeast you go, the more homes you start seeing dominate the area.
Plymouth is a suburb of the Motor City, so it should be no shock that you're going to need a car to get around. Other than some transportation specifically for seniors and a couple of taxi companies, having your own car or hoofing it are about your only transportation options.
Plymouth also has lots of fun activities right in town so you can enjoy your neighbors and your new home without having to trek all the way into downtown Detroit or artsy Ann Arbor. Plymouth hosts charming events all throughout the year, like the Plymouth Ice Spectacular ice-carving festival, the oldest ice-carving festival in the country. Other events you won't want to miss include the Fall Festival, the Green Street Fair, "Haunted Halloween" and Art in the Park.
