If you follow hockey, you might be familiar with Cottage Grove, a small town in Wisconsin that happens to be home of 2010 Olympic Winter Games Silver Medalist Jessie Vetter.
Cottage Grove is located just northeast of Madison, and the village is part of one of the city's largest metropolitan areas. With access to concerts, outdoor living and the peace and quiet that comes from such a strategically located village, how could residents not love Cottage Grove? Cottage Grove is easily accessed and just a short drive from Milwaukee or Chicago if you want to experience some real big-city living. However, it's also as quaint as a cottage in a fairy tale story!
Looking for rental apartments should offer no big surprises for anyone who has lived in Wisconsin before. Although, you might be surprised how affordable living in the state can be if you're coming from some other place in the country. Apartments are easy to find. Duplexes make perfect places for rent in Cottage Grove, if you're interested in having a little more space and privacy than an apartment community typically offers. In fact, many of the apartment developments in the area are newer than in some locations in the state and in surrounding Madison, which is why so many people choose to live in Cottage Grove. Property values are higher on average in the village than they are in the state -- $246,805 versus $166,700. Expect that you'll need a larger loan upfront. However, newer houses that are more energy efficient will cut down on your heating bill over time.
The small size means that Cottage Grove lacks its own downtown or "Main Street" like some other locations. It even shares shares a school district with Monona Grove!
Even though Cottage Grove isn't directly in the middle of the hustle and bustle, residents never have to feel isolated. I-94 is just up the road from the village. Chicago is only two hours away, and you can get there by plane, car or even Amtrak, if you head to the station in Madison. Madison's Metro Transit bus system also services Cottage Grove. Madison offers plenty to do, too, with geeky conventions galore -- the city hosts a steampunk convention every November -- and plenty of local and international talent playing at bars and amphitheaters. The city has a strong college culture. Cottage Grove is more of a residential suburb, so you might have to drive to Madison if you want to do some heavy shopping. Of course, if you choose to live in Cottage Grove, you can retreat from the younger, bar-hopping crowd if it all gets to be too much.
