Covering an extremely commuter friendly area of just over 2.22 square miles, South Farmingdale counted a population of 14,486 during the 2010 census. It doesn't matter whether you specify "South Farmingdale" or "Farmingdale" as your postal address, as both areas are served by the same post office. The same is true for the school district and library, but arsonphobics can be rest assured, South Farmingdale does have its own fire department, with very capable firefighters ready to act at the smallest hint of smoke. Farmingdale got its name from a general store, which was run by land developer Ambrose George back in the 1800's. South Farmingdale is one of 18 hamlets (and 36 places in total) in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, Long Island, so it doesn't really have neighborhoods of its own. This town is the only one in Nassau County that stretches all the way from the northern to the southern shore of Long Island. South Farmingdale is about 39 miles from Manhattan, which makes for a commute of an hour or more, depending on traffic.
Shopping / Eating Out
As this is mostly a residential area, South Farmingdale doesn't have a downtown or main shopping area. For some quick grocery shopping, Stop & Shop, Pineda Grocery or Compare Foods on Main Street are more than adequate. Nassau Mall is also only a couple of minutes' drive away. If you have stomach problems (of the rumbling type) a couple of great restaurants, such as Rosemarie's Pizzeria and Restaurant and Wing Hing Kitchen are sure to please your palate and fill your belly.
Recreation
If ball sports are your thing, Allen Park is the place to be as it boasts several basketball courts, handball courts, tennis courts, soccer, football and lacrosse fields as well as baseball and softball fields. For the less active, the park also has a lovely picnic area where you can simply relax and enjoy soaking in the trees, blue skies and other sportsmen. Golf lovers and those who want some more adventure or space could drive to Bethpage State Park, just north of South Farmingdale's boundaries. If your two legs are your pride and joy, there is an epic walking trail at the Massapequa Preserve just south of the hamlet where you could put them to good use.
Getting Around
Buses do run through the area, but most residents prefer taking the car to where they need to be and a smaller percentage commute using the train. On average, people around here don't take longer than 30 minutes to get to work.
South Farmingdale is a great place to live and very centrally located. If you are lucky enough to find an apartment here, you will never be sorry about making the move.
