There's a secret about New City, New York. It's not really a city at all, but a hamlet, located inside of the city of Clarkstown. Although it's small, it's given rise to plenty of stars, including MLB player Derek Jeter, and Jordan Rudess from the band Dream Theater.

Lying just 18 miles outside of the Bronx, New City is a destination for those who don't want to pay New York City's high residential prices but still want to be within spitting distance of the Big Apple. It's a fairly expensive area, so finding an apartment to rent here is going to be a challenge if you are on a budget. But you'll be rewarded with various must-see historical attractions -- and who doesn't like to learn about the history of the place they live? People come to New City to check out Coe's Tavern, a location where Continental Army troops gathered, and the English church and schoolhouse, which date to the settlers of this region. The HR Stevens House, Dutch Garden, and the Dellwood Country Club all give meaning to the city. Of course, you'll still need to find apartments in New City that offer what you need, but locating a beautiful home here isn't hard to do.

Life in New City

Mostly residential, the city of New City offers mostly higher-end homes -- and higher-end prices to match. Living here offers plenty of benefits, including about a 30-minute or less commute to work. If you are heading into Manhattan, on the other hand, expect to spend more time (even up to an hour) battling the traffic. Some residents travel into work in Rockland (a major city here) as well as to Westchester County, New Jersey, Bergen County, and New York City (The Bronx and Manhattan being the largest). This is also a booming city that's seen significant growth in the previous years. The few farms here have been mostly overtaken by pavement and residential neighborhoods. Of course, you still have a few golf courses to offer that green you are looking forward to enjoying by living outside the big city limits.

To find apartments in New City, individuals will need to act fast and scour the options. A condo rental or home rental may be easier to locate. Nevertheless, you will have to have stellar credit and a high income. Homes here tend to be larger, on larger lots, and have more modern amenities. Their location alone makes them highly valuable. About 8 percent of the homes here are rented and only 2 percent of the homes here are unoccupied at any given time.

Tips for Living in New City

You are unlikely to find many high-rise apartments in New City, because it isn't your typical urban area. However, you will find a home to rent that's right for you. To secure it, plan to make a decision early. You will also need a rather large down payment to secure the property. Many landlords in this region also are looking for renters who can pay for the entire year in advance, especially as a first-time renter. You may find a condo for rent here and there, too, but expect this to be less common than finding a home to rent.

Neighborhoods?

The hamlet of New City doesn't really have any named neighborhoods within its limits. Of course, since it is not a city itself, this makes sense. Nevertheless, the area's most desireable homes are located in the more prestigious subdivisions rather than along the main thoroughfares here. What you will find is that most streets have homes set back from the street. This is not really a walking neighborhood, though you can stroll along South Main Street to grab a coffee and stop to read the paper.

Are You Ready for THE New City?

It's expensive and it is a good 30 minutes for the commute to work. So, why live here? The Chocolatier (which has been here for 25 years) is one reason to move in. The library is large and offers various programs for the kids throughout the summer. The food at places like La Terrazza is just as good as those high-end facilities located in the heart of NYC, but far less expensive and without the month-ahead book time. There's plenty of shopping along South Main Street, though the couture shops are not really here. And, there's Lake Nanuet, which offers space for up to 3,000 of your closest friends for swimming. There are definitely some pluses to living in this beautiful city.
