The Northern Pacific Railway (NPR) played an important role in developing and defining the area that eventually came to be Livingston. The location on the Yellowstone River and close proximity to Yellowstone National Park are important shapers of Livingston that have served to influence many of the local pastimes of fishing, hunting, hiking, and horseback riding. However, these are not the only important geographical influences on the city, it is also bordered by 3 mountain ranges. Montana's nickname, Land of the Shining Mountains, can really be understood with the three ranges Crazy, Absaroka, and Bridger.
