Once called Harrisburg, Indiana, when the Gas Land Company was founded here in 1892, the town changed its name. The town turned to agriculture as a main industry when the company formally dissolved in 1904, but the name remained. What a gas!
One of the fastest growing towns in Grant County, IN, Gas City has a population of 5,965 as of the 2010 census. Located just 12 minutes from Marion and under 40 minutes to Muncie, Gas City has the pleasant feel of a small town with larger city amenities not far away. I-69 and U.S. Route 35 make the drive easy.
Moving to Town
If you like experiencing all four seasons and enjoy life in a small town, Gas City is a great place to experience both. With only one neighborhood in its four plus mile size, you'll want to give yourself about 30 days to find the right apartment for rent. You can check rental listings in local papers such as the "Riverside Palaver," or the weekly edition of the "Twin City Journal Reporter" that serves the area. It's always a good idea to come to town yourself and take a look at the community, and some rentals may only be listed with a sign on site, or by inquiring with a building manager.
So what are you waiting for? If you're looking for 1 bedroom apartments, or 3 bedroom houses for rent in Gas City, gas up your car and get going.
When to Look and What to Bring
Any season is fine to look for properties in the area, but things get a little chilly in the winter, so bring a warm coat. You'll want to have information for your future landlord such as your ID, bank statements or W2s, and your credit report. Be sure you have the information any rental application will ask regarding your work history and your rental history, too.
Neighborhoods
Gas City is a small community contained in a single neighborhood. But just because it's small doesn't mean it isn't fun! In fact, resident describe the areas as "hip and trendy," with locally run shops and over a 140 restaurants right in town. You won't go hungry here.
While owners outnumber renters, renters still make up over 26% of the Gas City population, occupying single family homes, apartments, and even furnished apartments for rent. Some apartment complexes in the area include the Parkville Apartments, Colonial Crest Apartments, and Hidden Ponds Apartments.
While commute times are short, and many residents work at the Franklin Electric Co. located right in Gas City, you'll still need a car to get around here, as public transportation options are not stellar.
Gassing It Up in Gas City
Gas City's charming lifestyle is exemplified in the attractive 90 acre park it maintains. A park this large is unusual for a town Gas City's size, and the community's commitment to this vast green space says a lot about the quality of life here. Eugene "Beaner" Linn Park is located in the southwest section of the city, and it meanders along the Mississinewa River, where locals love to fish. Bring that rod and reel and check it out.
There's also an Olympic-size swimming pool open every summer -- it can hold up to 600 swimmers and is lifeguard patrolled. The park also has a band shell where many performances take place, a batting cage, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, and basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball play areas. Kids aren't forgotten: there's a playground and plenty of picnic areas too. Enjoy a walk, a bike ride, or just plain relax here.
Music Time
The bandshell at the Gas City Park serves as the home of the Gas City Area Chamber Concerts in the Park. Free of charge, the eclectic musical offerings are held every Tuesday evening in June and July.
Dining options for after the show? Jackie's Diner, the quintessential small diner in a small town is a local favorite. Or check out the Casa Grande Mexican Grille and Bar. Many options abound.
Festival Fun
Gas City has many celebrations throughout the year, including the Boom Town 1892 celebration featuring USA Boxing events, a Vintage Baseball Game reenacting a game as it would've been played in the 1800s, and the Hickory Shaft golf tournament.
The town also hosts an Old Fashioned Fourth of July, holiday light displays, and the Ducktail Run Rod & Custom Show, where over 2800 vehicles showed up last year, and a swap meet, crafts fair, and car contests are held.
The town does love its cars -- there's also the Gas City 1-69 Speedway, check out the zoom-zoom if you are a racing fan.
