City Guide
Moving to Stickney

Once you start looking for an apartment for rent in Stickney, you will be glad to discover the many different choices here. The community of Stickney has many nice places to call your new home throughout the village, including condos for rent, duplexes for rent, and lots of apartment homes, in addition to some lovely townhouses and single-family homes to check out.

Is Stickney a popular area?

Yes it is, so it's certainly a good idea to let yourself have a solid bit of time to discover a place in Stickney before you pack up and move -- probably a month will work best. Rental properties here can appear and disappear in a very short period of time, so you'll want to find what you're looking for and then act quickly. You can look into online listings as well as the local Stickney newspaper -- The Stickney Life -- or look for listings in the Chicago Tribune's weekend classifieds. Naturally, you should, if you can, spend some time in the village yourself, to find the ideal spot.

What will you need when you move here?

Not necessarily a car, as there is excellent public transportation in and around the community, and even for those commuting for work or pleasure into the heart of metropolitan Chicago. For your landlord, you should be sure to bring information about yourself -- from your ID and credit report to bank statements, proof of employment, and maybe your tax returns.

How about when to look?

You can search for rentals at any time of year, but the spring or summer months are best because fall and winter can bring snow and rain that makes the search and hauling all your stuff around a little more difficult.

Neighborhoods of Stickney

Parks provide recreational activities and special events, such as summertime concerts. There's definitely an atmosphere of relaxation in this small community, even if it is so close to the big city of Chicago.

Stickney Village: Stickney is a very small community and considered to be more or less one consolidated neighborhood. Within the village, you can discover many apartment homes of various shapes, sizes, and ages, as well as condos and furnished homes. Ridgewood Condos is a great place to find a quality condo if that's what you happen to be looking for. Residents of Stickney enjoy easy access to local shops and cafes, like Bodhi Thai Bistro or the popular Czech Plaza (have to love those dumplings!) You'll find a variety of eateries and coffee shops along Pershing Road. The community has ample public transit stops, a well-stocked library, community center, nearby zoo, golf courses, malls, and a number of other great amenities to fall in love with. The Des Plaines River is nearby, offering trails, bird and wild life watching, and boating. White Eagle Woods and Portage Woods are the vast green spaces adjoining this village -- a huge draw for nature lovers.

Life in Stickney

There's no lack of great things to see and explore in the community of Stickney. The village's Parks and Recreation Department hosts a number of exciting town events throughout the year, including a police-sponsored golf tournament. Each summer, Stickney offers visitors and guests multiple opportunities to hear live music outdoors at the Music at The Park concerts, held in Veteran's Memorial Park. There are also flea markets, craft days, farmers markets with fresh fruits and vegetables, and outings to nearby nature areas.

Fans of the great outdoors will have a wonderful time in Stickney. There are tons of beautiful parks and woods close by, including the Ottawa Trail Woods, Le Claire Hearst Park, Piotrowski Park, the White Eagle Woods, Brookfield Woods, Millers Meadows, and Proksa Park. All of these make great destinations for hiking, biking, walking, picnicking, and some allow camping as well.

Shopping fever flushing your forehead? There is also great shopping to be had in Stickney. The Cermak Plaza Shopping Center and North Riverside Park Mall are both only a short drive or bike ride away. These shopping centers offer many national retail shops.

If you're looking to play some golf or other sports, be sure to check out the La Grange Country Club just south of the village. Here, visitors can take a refreshing swim in the full-sized pool, play a round on the 18-hole course, take up tennis, or just relax. The Riverside Golf Club is also very close by.

For a great day of fun for the whole family, you won't want to miss the animals at the Brookfield Zoo. Here you can see giraffes, lions, snakes, birds, monkeys, and more up close and personal.

The community of Stickney is a lovely small town just a short drive away from the large metropolitan center of Chicago. When you want to explore the great museums like the Art Institute of Chicago, or the city's exciting German restaurants, or take in a stage show -- perhaps you'll catch a comedy act at Chicago's renowned Second City -- then you don't even have to drive. Just catch a train into Chicago off Ridgeland Avenue. Stickney is a nice for place for those who love experiencing real seasonal weather -- the summer months are generally warm and humid, the falls are cooler and full of changing leaves, winter brings picturesque snow and some rain, and the spring is a great time to spot beautiful wildflowers blooming in many of the woods adjacent to Stickney. The mix of accessibility to wildlife areas and to the urban opportunities of Chicago make Stickney a great village to call home.
