City Guide
Palos Heights
Renting in Palos Heights

How Much Will it Cost?

The many joys to be gained from residing in the city of Palos Heights do come at a price. The cost of living is far higher than the rest of Illinois.

When to Begin Looking

You should allow at least 6 weeks to find an apartment or rental house in Palos Heights. The demand is relatively high, so don't rest on your laurels for too long. When looking to move in, try to avoid the wetter months as Illinois sees about 51 thunderstorms a year. Not to sound like a recorded message, but summers are hot and humid and winters are cold so it'd be best to avoid those months, too.

What you Need

When pondering rental apartments or townhouses for rent in Palos Heights, the prerequisites are very similar to elsewhere in the country. As the prospective tenant, you will be expected to provide details of your current employment status and level of income. You'll also be asked for bank account info, and the new landlord may make a request for contact details of your previous three rentals.

Neighborhoods in Palos Heights

Now comes the difficult part, picking a neighborhood. Check out the list below to help you figure out where in Palos Heights you'd like to live.

Ishnala: This area is a good place to start looking for either a home for rent or apartments for rent. On the west side of Palos Heights, you can expect a moderate commute; the average drive time to work clocks in around 20 minutes. Still, you can find spacious yards in front of homes.

South Massasoit Avenue: South Massasoit Avenue offers a few rental homes to those not interested in buying. Local amenities include six restaurants and one grocery, all within easy walking distance. Check out Country House Restaurant for dinner one night.

South 71st Avenue: You can also find rental apartments on South 71st Avenue, which is right downtown. Amenities within easy walking distance include 12 restaurants and a single bank.

Lake Katherine: Situated in the northwest corner of Palos Heights, the Lake Katherine neighborhood enjoys a lake within its boundaries, an adjacent park (Altman Park), and both rentals and homes for sale.

Life in Palos Heights

Getting Around

Although Palos Heights is set in a quiet, rural environment, tucked away from the hectic frenzy that impacts much of the metropolitan area of Chicago, it's still well-connected by road. The I-294 (Tri-State Tollway) lies only 3 miles distant from central Palos Heights. The highway links the small city to Chicago expressway in addition to the entire highway system. Getting to downtown Chicago takes merely around 30 minutes. The nearest Amtrak station is at Summit, 8.8 miles away. Need to get away for a while? We know, we know: winter can be rough -- Chicago Midway International Airport is located on South Cicero Avenue, 9 miles from central Palos Heights.

Keeping Busy

Palos Heights hosts six public parks together with an Olympic-sized community swimming pool. There are also no less than 36 public and private golf courses within a 10-mile radius of the city, allowing Palos Heights and the surrounding area to claim the renowned status as a suburban golfing capital. The 68,000 acre Cook County Forest Preserve permits the city to enhance its contact with nature. Not convinced? How about this -- the preserve offers visitors year-round activities including biking, hiking, walking, tennis, in-line skating, equestrian and dog-walking facilities.
