Neighborhoods of Carterville

In an area with a population this low, you can't expect neighborhoods in the urban sense of it. In most cases you will be looking at census or real estate designations. In a few cases, such as with Carterville, the neighborhoods are nothing more than areas that used to be towns in their own right but were annexed into the city. That being the case here, there are two neighborhoods.

Town Center: This is the original city of Carterville. Here you will find a few small apartment buildings and apartments for rent over shops, which is kind of interesting. Most of the rentals will be in the way of single-family homes and trailers. Don't expect huge houses either; 3-4 bedrooms is considered the average. You will likely find that you now have a yard to tend so consider buying a lawnmower as most homes in this area have decent sized yards.

Crab Orchard: This area was annexed into the city and retains much of it's individuality due largely to the Crab Orchard Wildlife Refuge located nearby. If you like to fish and want a more rural living arrangement then this might be just the area for you. The home rentals in this area will be 2-3 bedroom rural houses or trailers.

Living in Carterville

What you have to understand from the beginning is that sports are very important to the local community. The games are well attended and discussion of the previous game dominates conversations at The Country Cupboard Restaurant on Division St. The food's good and the locals are friendly and eventually the conversation will drift over to the evils of Chicago if you hang out long enough.

If you like fishing then you will love living in this area. You are always within an easy drive of great fishing spots. Crab Orchard, Harrisburg and McLeansboro all have outstanding fishing spots. If you want to combine your fishing trip with camping and hiking, head over to the Shawnee National Forest and visit the Garden of the Gods.
