Despite its name, Battleground is famous for a fight that was never quite fought.
A long time ago (and in a galaxy not so far away), U.S. soldiers were dispatched to confront members of the Klickitat native tribe in Battleground. The U.S. captain actually resolved the issue peacefully -- but some town dwellers, itching for a fight, accused the captain of cowardice and mockingly named the site "Strong's Battleground," after him. Over the years, the name was shortened and then made official. Who would've thought a town of over 15,000 would have such a troubled, yet untroubled, past?
It's one of those places that is far enough out of the main metro area that it still retains a country feel, with farmland, ranch animals, and horse property intermingled with new developments of single-unit homes and apartments. Moving here is relatively easy and not a "battle" either -- the town is still recovering somewhat from the economic downturn because it was in full-on boom mode before. House rentals in Battleground can come in the form of a standard lease or rent to own. The population is smallish but continues to grow, and a good portion of the residents commute to workplaces in Vancouver, Washington, or across the Columbia River to Portland, Oregon. The town lies in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, with the famous volcano Mount Saint Helens looming to the northeast. Of course, begin your search for an apartment to rent as early as you can, but don't be stressed into thinking there might not be any available, as the vacancy rate is higher than average here.
Unlike a lot of places, Main Street actually is one of the primary streets of the town, and roughly divides it north and south. Another divider, from the east to the west, is 10th Avenue. These four quadrants formed by the two streets are almost equal in size to one another.
Northwest: This part of town is almost all newer homes built into tracts over the last decade or so. House rental options may include rent-to-own and traditional leases. There is a large shopping complex anchored around a Fred Meyer store, too.
Northeast: Some of the bigger apartment complex rentals are on this side of 10th Avenue, as well as educational facilities.
Southwest: It's the most sparsely populated quadrant, with newer subdivisions building out into the surrounding farmland and wooded areas.
Southeast: Most of the older parts of Battleground are here. Older homes with mature landscaping are set along tree-lined streets.
The combination of a country setting that is still within easy distance to a big metro area lends a special charm. Being right next door to great outdoor recreational opportunities isn't bad either! With 18 parks, miles of trails and paths to explore in town and the Lewis River and Battle Ground Lake State Park just minutes away, there's lots to see and explore. If you currently live near to the area, don't let talk about the winter rains get you down. Sure, it rains -- but that's what makes the region so green and beautiful! Not to mention, the summers can't be beat.
