Cedar Lake, Indiana, is named for its desert climate and complete lack of bodies of water. Just kidding! The town gets its name from -- what else? -- a 794-acre lake. Cedar Lake (the body of water) draws residents interested in playing around on the shore and splashing about in the water.
With a population of about 11,560, Cedar Lake is considered a medium-sized town

With a population of about 11,560, Cedar Lake is considered a medium-sized town. It spans a little over nine square miles with over one mile of that in the form of water. People here do pretty much what anyone does in any town across the United States: they work, play, work out, veg out, and just live. However, this town is laden with things to do outdoors. You can be a homebody here, but you might not have much company.
Rental vacancy rates aren't too shabby, so if you start your apartment search early, you might even land one of the coveted all-bills-paid apartments. Regardless of whether you end up on easy street or stuck with power bills to pay, you'll find a variety of rental homes in Cedar Lake as well as apartments and even some high-rises. If you're interested in pet-friendly apartments, you'll find them too, but expect to pay an extra deposit. Landlords protect their investments just in case Fido is spray happy or Fluffy thinks floors are really just claw sharpeners.
There aren't a lot of distinct neighborhoods in this town, but you can live here without breaking the bank. Here are a few neighborhoods to consider:
W. 109th Avenue / Cline Avenue: You'll find homes, rental apartments, and high-rise apartments here. The WalkScore is between five and nine, so gas up the hoopty.
Town Center: If there's an expensive part of town, this is it. The area offers a variety of rental types and decent vacancy rates. You might even land a condo for rent here. Town Center's WalkScore is five, so don't expect to get around much on foot.
Morse Street / W. 141st Avenue: This part of town also features a decent variety of rental options. It's more expensive than most Indiana communities, but still more affordable than many places across the country. You need a car here, as the area's WalkScore is only nine, which is a little better than the five of Town Center, but still -- get some wheels and make your life easier.
Once you've made yourself at home here, head out to the lake. The lake consists of close to 800 acres of water and thousands of feet of shoreline on which you'll find picnic tables and plenty of untouched space on which to play Frisbee. There's also 18 acres of park land. Lakeside recreation not your thing? Don't worry. You'll also find the Lake of the Red Cedars Museum, the annual Cedar Lake Summerfest, and plenty of shopping and restaurants to keep you busy.
