You should give yourself about thirty days to find an apartment complex that suits you, in this pleasant suburban community bordering the Kern River and the city of Bakersfield, just six miles away. Where to Look and What to Bring
The Bakersfield Californian is a good resource for rental listings, but you should plan on driving around this area to look for rental signs and get a feel for the area.
While the area around Greenacres can get chilly in the winter months, this isn't snow boot and down jacket weather. You'll be fine with a light winter coat, and in the summer, shorts and a tee shirt will do. Dry heat can make this inland community near an area rich in farmland and oil fields quite warm (and by warm, we mean hot).
For your future landlord, bring the information many California landlords look for these days: your ID, credit report access, information about where you last worked, and references from previous rentals. If you're self employed you're going to need bank statements to prove your net worth.
Neighborhoods in Greenacres
With the much larger city of Bakersfield just west of it, Greenacres IS the place to be if you want a quiet neighborhood with easy access to dining and entertainment options.
Greenacres: The center of the community is made up mostly of medium to small single family homes and a mix of apartment complexes of all sizes. Most of the real estate, occupied by both owners and renters, is on the new side, built between 1970 and the present. Quail Wood is one of the apartment complexes you could explore.
Polo Grounds: An area consisting of primarily single family homes, this part of Greenacres has more owners than renters, although rental properties are available, mostly built between 1970 and the present. Polo Village is one apartment complex you could check out here.
Living in Greenacres
Windsong Park and Green Acres Park and Community Center are located in this community just off the Rosedale Highway. This small, suburban area offers the opportunity for bird watching and walking along the banks of the Kern River, as well.
Like Country music? You'd be right at home here. Less than fifteen minutes away in the heart of Bakersfield, you'll find Buck Owens' Crystal Palace, a music hall that serves as a tribute to the late country great Buck Owens, who built it and the so called Bakersfield Sound he was a part of. Line dancing, steaks, and live music are just three of the reasons to check out this vast country music showcase. National acts and local musicians both fill the stage seven nights a week.
Have you ever tasted Basque cuisine? With a proud heritage in the region, Basque restaurant options are many in the Bakersfield area. Wool Growers is among the most popular purveyors of the food rooted in French and Spanish cooking. You can get another taste of the cuisine and enjoy fun and games at the annual Kern County Basque Festival located in the area, too.
Other culture is right at your doorstep. The Kern County museum contains many regional historical artifacts and has a fascinating permanent exhibit on oil in the region, Black Gold. The Lori Brock Children's Discovery Museum is an interactive children's museum that includes a country music display. The Buena Vista Museum of Natural History is another fascinating museum, with a strong collection of Miocene era marine fossils from this region.
