Oradell is outta this world! Well, one Oradell resident actually has been! Oradell was home to the first New Jersey resident to orbit the earth, Commander Walter M. Schirra Jr. Commander Schirra was an astronaut who embarked on his journey into the great unknown on October 3rd 1962. There is a park in the center of Oradell dedicated to this intrepid traveler of the stars.
Oradell is a borough in the heart of Bergen County. The 2010 Census estimates its population to be around 7,978 people. Oradell is a little over two and a half square miles in size. According to a poll conducted by New Jersey Monthly, Oradell was ranked as the 68th best place to live in the state, which makes it one of the top towns in the state to reside.
Moving to Oradell
Oradell is a pleasant suburb in Bergen County -- so pleasant, in fact, that finding a rental here can be a bit of a challenge. In general, this is a more affluent area so the cost of living is a bit higher than other suburbs in Bergen County, which will affect the cost of incidental expenses, so be sure to factor in variables like higher rent and other increases in living expenses prior to making the move to this area.
The majority of the residences in Oradell are single-family homes and most of them are owned rather than rented. You can find some one-bedroom apartments for rent, townhouse rentals and some single-family home rentals as well. Be sure to lock in your lease as soon as possible as the demand for an apartment, home or townhouse is very high. As of right now there aren't many pet-friendly apartments, so if you have a furry friend consider renting a single-family home instead.
One of the major benefits to living in Oradell is the easy access the residents have to mass transit. They have their own train station and have a number of bus lines capable of getting commuters to New York City and the outlying areas.
Neighborhoods in Oradell
Most of Oradell is divided by Oradell Avenue, the main transit route through the borough. This road also is the dividing line between the two main neighborhoods in Oradell, the Borough Center and the Kinderkamack Road Section of town.
Borough Center: This neighborhood is the pricier of the two in Oradell. It's also a bit more spread out than the neighborhood along Kinderkamack Road, so walking along in it to run errands isn't really efficient if you want to make good time. Most people use a car to get their day-to-day duties done, but if you're in no hurry, biking in this neighborhood is another option. In fact, many people bike along Oradell Avenue instead of driving. While you're out there working up a sweat, stop by Savino's Pizzeria on one of your secret cheat days and take a bite out of some delicious New Jersey pizza.
Kinderkamack Road: The Borough Center is on the western section of town, and ends at Oradell Avenue. The other neighborhood begins at Oradell Avenue and goes east until it hits Kinderkamack Road, which borders on a few other of towns in the area, like Emerson. Kinderkamack Road is a very attractive part of town; no matter which way you take it, you'll run into some nice shops, restaurants, some boutiques and other businesses. One of the major fine dining hot spots in the area is called The Melting Pot -- it's a delicious fondue restaurant.
Living in Oradell
Oradell is a bustling busy little borough. On both of the major roads there are shops and restaurants. Kinderkamack Road has a few more, so if you're looking for local entertainment, try there first. If you feel like driving a few extra minutes, a quick trip down Oradell Ave to Route 17 will put you in the heart of one of Northern New Jersey's larger shopping areas. From there you can either take Route 17 South or North. South will take you to Garden State Plaza, a large, well-maintained mall with hundreds of shops and a number of fine dining restaurants like Papa Razzi and Legal Seafood. Route 17 North will put you up into the Ramapo Reserve Area where there is fishing, hiking, parks, and playgrounds.
