When early settlers came upon this area along the south branch of the Sunrise River, they decided this was a place to call home. As they were originally from the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania, they chose to name the town Wyoming.
Wyoming, Minnesota is situated in a beautiful area known for its rolling hills, sparkling lakes, lush woodlands, and small towns. Only 30 miles from the Twin Cities, this is a great place for those who want to commute and benefit from a city income while leading a small town life. Summers in Wyoming are hot and humid, thanks to all the lakes in the area, and winters are freezing, often with plenty of snow. Trust me, if you rent an apartment that is well insulated and has heating and cooling options installed, you can lead a comfortable life in Wyoming.
Becoming a Proud Tenant
Availability
Brace yourself--finding rental apartments in Wyoming is no easy task. People who move here usually come to settle permanently, so they prefer to buy the house over paying the landlord's mortgage. According to the 2010 census, only about 13 percent of all properties are occupied by tenants, with a miniscule 0.67 percent up for rent at any given time. You will have to have patience and perseverance if you have your heart set on renting here.
Forget About a Small Place
Studios and one bedroom apartments for rent are virtually impossible to find. Even a 2 bedroom condo to rent may take a long time to locate, as over 84 percent of all residential properties in the area are at least 3 bedrooms or bigger. If you were planning to live alone, you might have to rethink your strategy and get some roommates to help split the costs. The good news is that rental properties in Wyoming are more affordable than in the rest of Minnesota and also lower than the national average.
Neighborhoods
While Wyoming is too tiny for neighborhoods, its small town character has a big heart, with loyal, friendly people who receive newcomers with open arms. The people of Wyoming are known to work hard to uplift their community. One great example is the girl scouts, who annually organize a cleanup to keep the town's parks tidy.
Living in Wyoming
Recreation
Believe it or not, this small town has 14 parks and two beautiful walking trails -- the Sunrise Trial and Hawk Meadows trail. There are plenty of places to explore, picnic, and enjoy the fresh air. Wyoming's air quality is said to be much better than the average for both Minnesota and the rest of the U.S.
Getting Around
Although the fresh air is exhilarating and nature is enjoyable up close and personal, walking around won't get you anywhere fast and a bicycle is not the best way to commute here either. Most people choose to drive their own car to get to work, while a small amount of people carpool. Travel time to work among residents varies greatly, as some work in the Twin Cities and have a long commute, while others live within a 10-minute drive from their jobs.
Shopping and Entertainment
In winter, Wyoming has a lovely ice rink where the youth love to gather. Those who like to live a frugal life will be delighted to know that Wyoming has a large thrift store, Family Pathways, with a lot of interesting hidden treasures. For the hungry, Village Inn and Tasty Asia Takeout come highly recommended. If you enjoy shooting and demolishing things, you will have a ball at the Stars and Strikes Entertainment Center, where you can go bowling, play laser tag, or enjoy arcade games.
Horror Oh Horror
Wyoming is quite the attraction during Halloween, with folks from the Twin Cities flocking to the area to experience the pumpkin patches of Pinehaven Farm and Lendt's Pumpkin Patch, as well as corn mazes, hayrides, and other fun Halloween activities in the area.
