With so many lakes in close proximity the fun and the entertainment focus heavily around water and everything it has to offer. Detroit Lakes is a bustling little city that is home to large festivals that call people from all over the country, yet lends itself nicely to sipping a cool beverage on a dock on a warm afternoon as well. The population increased ten percent between 2000 and 2010 as people found the area a desirable one to relocate to. In 2010, the population was 8,569. During the summer, this number skyrockets to about 13,000 as others come to enjoy this beautiful city. In August, the city hosts WE Fest, a famous camping and country music festival. Each year, the festival draws over 50,000 attendees.

Maplewood State Park is just 25 minutes south, and offers horseback riding and scenic hikes and bicycle paths. In the winter 13 miles of trails are groomed for cross country skiing and 15 miles of snowmobile trails. Thirty minutes to the west Buffalo River State Park boasts a dozen miles of pretty hiking and six miles of ski trails. Just an hour away, the Itasca State Park will give you a chance to wade through the very beginning of the mighty Mississippi. Naturalist programs and interpretive exhibits offer a chance to learn more about the wildlife and environment that surround the area. And of course, there is always the beloved pastime of fishing.

An old 1931 school building is home to a renovated nine and a half million dollar 837-seat Historic Holmes Theatre featuring orchestra and balcony level seating.
