Beverly Hills was originally named Westwood when the town was incorporated in 1958. It was renamed Beverly Hills a year later.

Beverly Hills (not the 90210) is one of those pretty little villages that makes you want to move right into the town and never leave. The people are warm and welcoming, which is nice because it's pretty darn cold here in the winter. You will want to bring snow boots, a snow shovel and a heavy parka when you move. Summers are great though, as it gets hot enough to make swimming a fun activity but not so hot you feel like you are living in a volcano!

Renting in Beverly Hills

Finding a great house rental is not difficult in Beverly Hills, and it's not terribly hard to rent a place either. You will need the standard first and last months' rent along with a security and pet deposit, if applicable. Deposits for utilities are standard for all renters, and you will need a copy of your lease agreement to get cable installed or the water service activated. The application process isn't too time consuming in most areas, with little more than a soft credit check being performed. In many cases you can avoid all of that if you have a reference from a past landlord. While you might find an all-bills-paid studio for rent, this is not typical.

Neighborhoods in Beverly Hills

This charming little village is not divided into true neighborhoods in the sense that you find in major cities -- or even smaller cities for that matter. These are mostly a simple way for real estate agents to market their properties. The primary differences are going to be rural versus town living.

Lahser: If you are looking for a place in this area and find something, you need to move quickly! This area is primarily owner-occupied single-family homes, and the market has always been tight here. Finding a house rental can be tricky but not impossible.

Southfield: There is only a small residential area here, and the market for rentals is always tight. Most of the homes in this area are three- to four-bedroom homes with large yards and friendly people.

Village Center: This is going to be your best bet for find housing for rent in Beverly Hills. The market is still historically close in this area, but that makes sense when you consider that this is the heart of the town, and everyone wants to live where there is the most action. Check out Noodles and Company or nearby The Oakland when you need to get out of the house.

Get Used to the Weather

Depending on where you have moved from, it can be a bit of a shock when you move here. If you are from the deep south, prepare for long, cold and snowy winters. Unless you rent in an apartment complex, you will be responsible for clearing your driveway and sidewalks of snow. You can hire someone to do this, use a shovel or get a snow blower. Don't let the threat of snow deter you from moving here. There are far more positives than negatives. Snow doesn't slow many things down around these parts, and almost everyone is good at navigating in it. There are also plenty of snow-related activities such as snowboarding, skiing and skating. Being this far north, summers are cooler than in the southern states. It rarely gets blistering hot, but it does get hot enough to make swimming a favorite summer activity. Gardening is also popular in Beverly Hills, and the garden club is a great way to meet the locals and start forming friendships.

Sample the Local Fare

Once you settle into your new home, you are going to be looking for places to shop, dine and just hang out. If you like seafood and pasta, stop in at the Beverly Hills Grill for the Creole Shrimp Linguine, a local favorite; their steaks are also recommended. This isn't just a dinner spot; they are open for breakfast and lunch as well, and their weekend brunch is very popular with the locals, with both their omelets and French Toast getting raves from reviewers. For something a bit more low key, like a burger and beer, try Brady's Tavern. Their burgers are outstanding, and the beer is ice cold.

Get Out and Enjoy the Sunshine

If you enjoy the great outdoors you will want to be sure and visit the beautiful nature preserve located in Beverly Hills or perhaps visit Riverside Park and do some fishing! Pets are welcome as long as they are on a leash, and both locations are great for having a picnic. Beverly Park is probably the most popular outdoor place in Beverly Hills. There is a hill for sledding in the winter as well as an ice skating rink. For summer fun, there are places designated for baseball, basketball and volleyball. There are even outstanding trails for hiking and biking.
