Berlin is home to the oldest railway station in New Jersey -- the Long-A-Coming Depot. Sounds like the locals were a bit impatient!
Berlin is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey, and currently more than 7,500 people call it home. Don't confuse it with Berlin Township, with which it shares a border! This community was incorporated in 1927 and is a part of the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve, a million acre tract of land officially referred to as a United States Biosphere Reserve. This land was actually America's first National Reserve, founded in 1978.
Utilities
The Borough of Berlin is governed by a municipal government that consists of a mayor and six elected council members. These are the people you'll have to talk to before you move into the community, if not just to say "hello," then at least to set up running water, trash collection and recycling in your brand new one bedroom apartment! You'll also want to check in with them about which local power company is the most popular and reliable, and ditto with cable and internet services. Personal advice is better than the phone book, in this case.
Rental Apartments
There are plenty of shiny new apartment complexes and condos for rent in Berlin Borough, and even some that welcome pet cats and dogs. The prices here aren't cheap, but you're paying for some solid, near-new architecture, or in the case of larger rental homes, you're paying for fantastic renovations that include hardwood floors and period-design and paint on the exteriors. So basically, your new home is going to be pretty. Very pretty. And when it comes to rental apartments, puppies or kitties -- maybe both? -- are welcome to enjoy that prettiness with you.
This community is pretty small, which means that there aren't any formal, hard-lined neighborhoods to speak of. If you are interested in moving in, however, it might help to take a look at the borough from the north, south, and center sections
North: The north end of town crosses Highway 30 and is bordered at the south end by Clementon Road. Here you'll find a cozy residential area, the Berlin Cemetery and popular hangout, Lucien's Manor.
South: At the south end, you've got the Virtua Hospital and a commercial section that includes Kmart, banking facilities and traveler accommodations as well as private homes.
Center: The town center is the most heavily populated and commercial. The Tinker's Branch river flows right across the middle of Berlin and ends it's journey in the Berlin Limited Park. Here, you will find small one bedroom apartments and easy access to commercial services.
Groceries
You might think that quality groceries would be hard to find in such a small community, but you would be wrong! With at least half a dozen grocery store outlets in the borough, you can have your pick of the best supplies -- whether you're going for frozen dinners or fresh veggies. Check out Berlin Foods, Berlin Farmers, and Bob's Quality Meats and you'll be pleasantly surprised by the wide selection.
Commuting
If you are planning on working locally, from your home as a freelancer, or with a company in the borough, that's great -- but chances are you'll need to commute to and from work during the week. Most people that live here take the subway to save on gas, vehicle emissions and just the hassle of owning a car. Berlin is well connected to its neighboring towns and cities, so anything you need, just hop on the subway.
Restaurants
As most communities tend to do, Berlin has placed the majority of its eateries along the highway to entice passers-by. Most restaurants are in the center section of the borough, but there is something delicious to be found minutes away from any home, from Cherry Hill Night Out in the north to the Happy Family Chinese Restaurant in the south. The Filomena Cucina Rustica offers high-end Italian food for discerning palates, while the King of Pizza offers the most famous of Italian foods American-style. Take in breakfast or lunch at the White Horse Diner, and bring a date to the Asian Cafe for dinner. Dig in!
