Paris is a great little town that has a lot to offer the new arrival. From the good food, friendly people and a decent climate, Paris is a great place to call home. Bring some winter clothing because it does get cold here in the winter though it's far from as cold or snowy as the Dakotas or even Chicago. Paris is a community build in the old style with much of the downtown area centered around the Plaza with the courthouse that dominates the scene.
Renting in Paris is not all that different from renting in most other places except that you probably will not have to submit to a background check that would make a visit from Homeland Security seem like a picnic! It's a small town and pretty laid back as far as the application process is concerned. In an apartment complex there might be a soft credit check but that is the extent of it. Rental homes are generally even easier. In all cases you will need a security deposit; first and last months' rent and deposits for the utilities. Pet deposits are rare in private rentals but in apartment complexes you can expect both a deposit and monthly rental fee to be tacked on to the bill.
The only real purpose for neighborhood distinctions in Paris is for use by real estate agents. The Harris and Kansas areas were incorporated into the town and kept their designations as a way for real estate agents to explain the general area to prospective buyers.
Kansas: If you are hoping to find a studio apartment for rent then you will want to look elsewhere; this is a rural area where houses dominate the landscape. Expect to find medium sized 3-4 bedroom houses with large yards around here. Don't worry about wildlife; the squirrels are friendly enough. This is a quiet area owing to the size of the yards and distance between neighbors. If you enjoy stargazing you will be far enough away from the city lights to have a great view.
Harris: Your best shot at finding luxury apartments in Paris is going to be in this neighborhood. Here there are several apartment complexes along with homes for rent. You should know that 1 bedroom apartments for rent go quickly here so be sure to move fast when you find something that you like!
Town: The best place to find apartments in Paris is going to be in this area. This is the original town and it is still the heart of the action! Most of the restaurants, bars and stores are located in this area. The streets are well laid out so navigating around town is a cinch.
For starters, this is a great place to live climate-wise. You get 4 distinct seasons per year and they generally all pleasant. You are far enough north to avoid the worst of the summer heat and humidity but far enough south to avoid the the bitter cold and the worst of the ice and snow. Spring and autumn are glorious and for gardeners and leaf watchers making this is a great place to live.
Once you get settled you are going to be looking for a few local hangouts. For a great dinner location, you want to be sure to try the Tuscany Steak and Pasta House. Their Italian feast is outstanding and their steaks get rave reviews from the locals. They also have an extensive wine list to complement every meal. For special occasions, you might want to get a reservation at Andrew's at the Westbrook. Their crab cakes are outstanding and they have an great selection of puffed pastry desserts. Everyone needs to know where to find the best pizza in town and in Paris it's at Joe's on Court street. It's a local favorite and people who grew up here often return just for the pizza; it's that good.
If you want a relaxing place to grab some cocktails with friends you have a couple of choices. Rosebuds Saloon is very popular and a relaxing place to go. Jim's Pub on Union street is also a great place to relax with friends and watch the game.
Popular local activities include gardening, hiking, biking and fishing. If you are more civic minded, you can catch up with the local city council by watching their meetings on the city website.
