This town was named after a railroad conductor named Earl Chubbuck. He was in charge of loading railroad cars with agricultural produce from the area. All produce in the area was loaded on to the trains at the Chubbuck Siding.
The area was home to Blackfoot Indians long before settlers arrived. Famous mountain man John Fremont surveyed the area and deemed it good for agriculture, but most settlers passed through on their way to Oregon or California. The towns didn't start to take shape until the railroad came through. Massive sugar beet farming led to the construction of the Chubbuck Siding, used to load the sugar beets onto the railroad, and the town eventually grew up around this activity. Essentially a suburb of the larger Pocatello, it's home to about 14,000 people, at the time of the 2010 U.S. Census. At the intersection of Interstates 86 and 15 and bisected by U.S. Highway 91, it remains a transportation hub.
Moving to Chubbuck
This part of Idaho is where waters from Wyoming's Grand Teton Mountains, via the Snake River, supply hundreds of farms, making the dry valley green with thriving crops. Although it is a fairly diversified economy, the influence of agriculture affects the search for places to live in Chubbuck. Some housing may be seasonal, which can make some months better for searching than others. Most places experience more moves in the summer, in a town with a lot of agriculture, there might be a lot of activity before and after the growing season as well.
You don't have to live on the farm to know when is the best time to find a place! Rental apts and homes will likely be looking for first, last, and deposit, along with a decent credit report. When you know you want to move, get going on a search of the best properties for your needs and work through it diligently.
Chubbuck Neighborhoods
Cotant Park / Redman Lateral: The southwestern part of the community is centered on Cotant Park. With its ball fields and tennis courts, the park is a popular recreation site. It's mostly made up of single family homes with a few properties built as multifamily units, which are great if you are looking for a duplex to rent.
East Chubbuck: East of the main drag, which is U.S. 91. A mix of commercial structures near the highway give way to a large manufactured home park, single family homes, and a large complex that would be a place to find a 1 bedroom apartment for rent. Just across the freeway to the south, in Pocatello, are a shopping mall and big-box retail plaza.
Stuart Lateral: The term lateral applies to the irrigation canals running through and around town. Many homes draw irrigation water for their lawns and landscaping directly from the canals. One the mid-north side of town is the Stuart Lateral, which also provides water for the grass at Stuart Park. A fairly large apartment complex is nearby, and more homes.
Living in Chubbuck
Just a few minutes to the west is the large American Falls Reservoir, filled with Snake River water held back by the dam, near the small town of American Falls. Boating, fishing, and swimming are all popular.
The nearby mountains provide cooling relief in the summer and winter recreation when the snow flies. This part of Idaho is also along the gateway to Yellowstone National Park. The west entrance is just over two hours away.
Like many small towns, residents love the local high school sports and follow them with passion. The restaurant and pub scene got a boost with the opening of the acclaimed Portneuf Valley Brewing pub in Pocatello.
