Terrytown's name is a little misleading, since it's not really a town. This subdivision is what people in suits like to call a census designated place. It has a concentration of residents, which is sometimes considered a suburb, or sometimes listed as a neighborhood of Gretna. Regardless of what you want to call it, this region of Louisiana has much to offer potential residents -- including a major shopping area and proximity to the notorious French Quarter.
Terrytown, LA covers approximately 3.8 square miles of territory in Jefferson Parish outside of the New Orleans-Metairie-Kenner metropolitan area. This is the area between the Terry Parkway and Carol Sue Ave. (Yup, named after another Kapelow child.) It started out as a relatively small development with a population of just 6,347 people, but has blossomed into something much more.
Terrytown tends to have a tight housing market. When shopping city apartments in this region, it is best to start early. Terrytown features a variety of structures consisting primarily of luxury apartments. The low vacancy rate means you might need up to six months to find an apartment in Terrytown, so the earlier you start looking, the better. This is especially true if you need something distinctive, like pet-friendly apartments or duplexes for rent.
Since Terrytown isn't technically a town, there are no designated neighborhoods. In fact, if you wanted to get picky, Terrytown itself is kind of like a neighborhood. The city of Gretna is the government seat of Jefferson Parish and sits just across the river from New Orleans. Terrytown lies sandwiched between the Gretna neighborhoods around Behrman Highway/Park Place Drive and Whitney Avenue/Cooper Road.
At the end of each year -- usually in October -- residents of Terrytown join the neighboring communities and kick up their heels at the award-winning Gretna Heritage Festival.
The rest of the year, Terrytown entertainment is limited to shopping and a library funded by riverboat gaming. You really can't be that upset, though, since you're so close to the legendary jazz music, po' boy sandwiches and seafood offerings of New Orleans.
Terrytown is a prime spot for those who work in the city of New Orleans. Many residents choose to drive, but buses are available for commuters going to one of the nearby metropolitan areas. Enjoy New Orleans culture, big-city business opportunities and more relaxed living with a pad in Terrytown.
