North Vernon, IN Apartment Renter's Guide

North Vernon, Indiana: Birthplace of Jessamyn West, the famous Quaker writer.

This is a city where over 90 trains used to rumble by, a city founded by two Civil War superheroes, Hiram Prather and Hagerman Tripp. Today, the "Crossroads of Indiana" is home to 6,728 people making their nest in 6.63 square miles of land. The sound of trains approaching is a mere echo of the past. And while the city likes to look back on its history, it has its eyes focused on the future. So if your eyes are set on the same thing, it's time to invest some time looking for an ideal rental apartment.

Moving to a new place can be arduous at best. You can have your mind reeling from the many things you have to accomplish before getting on a new apartment. Let's get some of those thorns off your chest have you on track with a few essentials in hunting for the perfect abode.

Live Where?

Some people are perfectly okay with living in an apartment complex while others can't tolerate the occasional noise that's bound to be part of the deal. Well, the good thing with living in North Vernon is that no matter what your preference is, you'll probably find a dwelling that suits you. The city has a good number of small rental apartment buildings as well as medium-size homes for your taking.

The thing is, there are some fixer uppers on the mix as well. So unless you're good with doing some renovations here and there, and deal with maintenance issues once in a while, better steer clear of those. And yeah, don't get easily charmed with a home's stately look and architecture. If the pipes don't work several months from now, "timeless charm" is going to be the last thing on your mind.

Prepare This

Patience. You're going to need lots of this if you don't want to settle for what's readily available. Sometimes, the perfect places to rent will only show up once you've scoured apartment locator sites and you've driven around North Vernon streets a couple of times on the lookout for the much coveted for rent sign. Having said this, you'd better have a few essentials ready (picture ID, proof of income, and reference) because you'll never know when the perfect nest does show up. And when it does, you'd want to get your signature on that agreement as soon as possible.

Now that you've decided to move here, it's time to pick your neighbors (or, at least, your neighborhood). Here's a rundown of North Vernon's different neighborhoods so you can start prowling only those areas you'd be proud to be a resident in.

City Center: This neighborhood is the cauldron of commerce, entertainment and business in North Vernon. If you want to live in a walkable area so you get to ditch that car once in a while, the City Center has a wealth of studio type to two-bedroom apartment units for you. City Park and Ford's Crossing Golf Course are in this area as well.

Country Squire Lakes: Located on the northern outskirts of North Vernon, this neighborhood is where you'd like to camp if you fancy living in a mobile home near Country Squire Lake. The area has a lot of farms as well. Fresh produce, anyone?

Hayden: This neighborhood is home to medium-size family homes and apts for rent, St Vincent Jennings Hospital, North Vernon Park and Hayden Historical Museum.

Life in North Vernon is pretty typical of small cities. Even though it's strategically located at the crossroads of Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and Louisville, the city is engrossed in a world of its own. If you want to be assimilated into that world, the city's parks should be your regular hang-out. This is where local events and festivities are usually held. Or if you're a history buff, take the time to visit Annadale, Walnut Street Historic District, and Downtown Historic District.

If adventure is in your genes, you might want to venture out to Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge. You can go pick some berries, get up close and personal with reptiles, birds, and wild mammals, or go hiking and take a breather.
