Wasco is a farming community in California's agriculturally rich Central Valley. The city is fairly close to Bakersfield and Fresno by car, and its economy is deeply rooted in agriculture, just as most cities in the region are. Wasco has the distinction of being a major producer of roses as well. In fact, more than half (about 55 percent) of all roses grown in the United States are grown in Wasco. Needless to say, Valentine's Day can be a stressful time for the rose farmers in Wasco! In addition to agriculture, Wasco's economy has diversified to include oil and gas extraction! Wasco is a popular place to live, with the population of Wasco just under 26,000 residents, according to the 2010 United States Census.
Wasco has been an increasingly popular place to live in recent years. House rentals, one bedroom apartments and 2 bedroom apartments in Wasco have seen consistently increasing demand as new residents take advantage of the recovering economy. Housing for rent options in Wasco now more closely resemble a major city. Before moving to Wasco, keep in mind that California housing laws are quite strict. While these laws do protect tenants from being unfairly evicted or otherwise poorly treated, they also make landlords particularly cautious, and as a result you can expect most, if not all, landlords to strictly adhere to laws regarding background checks, credit and rental histories, and sometimes even employment verification. Keep this in mind when looking for places in Wasco and be sure to allow enough time to get all of the legal paperwork completed with time to spare. You want to give yourself enough time to shop around before making any decisions.
Wasco is a typical agricultural town. This means that there are not very many distinct neighborhoods. Most of the city is farmland, with a city center that has more traditional housing and commercial areas. However, it is possible to separate the city into west, east and central neighborhoods.
West Wasco: West Wasco is the biggest "neighborhood" in the city and is where you can find a great deal of the traditional farming in Wasco.
East Wasco: While East Wasco is also primarily covered in farmland, this is the part of town where the majority of the Rose cultivation takes place. Whether you are considering a move to Wasco or are just passing through, it is worth driving through this neighborhood just to see row after row of growing roses. If you happen to be there during the busy season, you might be shocked at just how big of a business roses can be!
City Center: The center of town is where the majority of residents live. F Street and Stanley Pierce Memorial Highway serves as the primary intersection of this part of town, with the majority of single-unit homes and apartment units found within a couple miles.
Although Wasco is primarily an agricultural town, there are still a few fun places to go on your night off. Blue Sushi & Teriyaki is one of the most popular restaurants in the city, and you'll find that almost everyone in Wasco has been there at least once. If you prefer Mexican fare, be sure to check out Tortilleria Santa Cruz. For some egg rolls, Hot and Sour Soup, and Shrimp with Honey Walnut, be sure to have dinner at Hong Kong Restaurant -- you won't be disappointed! One other location of note is the Wasco Union High School Auditorium, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. If you are looking for a laid-back farming town that is close to larger cities like Bakersfield and Fresno, Wasco is certainly worth consideration.
