Clay is a city in the north of Jefferson County, Alabama, and it is home to just under 10,000 residents (according to the 2010 U.S. Census). With roots stretching back into history, this part of Alabama was home to at least one village before it was colonized by settlers.

Life in Clay

There are three basic neighborhoods in Clay: the City Center, Ayres, and the Jean Drive and Sweeney Hollow Road section. As you probably guessed, City Center is the heart of Clay. Here you can find medium and large houses that were mostly built between 1970 and 2000. Home values in this part of the city are considered somewhat pricey in Alabama terms, but they're actually quite affordable when you compare them to most other states. Neighborhoods

Ayres is a large community to the northwest of the City Center. Two-bedroom apartments for rent, furnished apartments and house rental listings are cheaper here than in the commercial section of town, but Ayres is mostly residential. If you're looking for a more impressive dwelling, Ayres is the right neighborhood for you! Large houses are plentiful, as are big, wide yards with old trees -- perfect yards for tire swings.

Jean Drive and Sweeney Hollow Road is a small neighborhood on the southwest part of the city. There are a few small retails centers here, and the Grayson Valley Country Club is really close by. Apt for rent are more expensive in this community than they are anywhere else in Clay, even though house prices are the cheapest. Weird, but good to know, right?

So What About Food and Entertainment and Stuff?

First things first -- if you like mountain biking, Clay's forest has some cool trails. If you like biking to work or to the grocery store, you won't have such a swell time because this isn't a bicycle-friendly town. There aren't mobs of gangsters looking to rough up your bike, or anything, it's just that the roads are built for vehicles and pedestrians only.

As for more sedentary entertainment, the Regal Trussville Stadium has an IMAX theater, and there's a Hooters down the road. Check out one of the local barbecue joints to get a taste of real Alabama heritage!
