Early, Early History
Before Europeans settled in the Burlington, mounds, built by Native Americans, were part of the area landscape. A village of the Potawatomi tribe was located in what is now Burlington at the time. Europeans began their migration into the region in the autumn of 1799. French expeditionary leader Francis Morgan de Vereceones led explorers, via the Fox River, into the then MichiganTerritory (it became part of the WisconsinTerritory in 1836). Making it Official - The Village Becomes a City
More settlers arrived in the area the next year, most of whom were from New England. Because of its location close to the Fox River, the settlement was called Foxville. However, residents agreed to change the name to Burlington (named for Burlington in Vermont), making the name official in 1839. Almost fifty years later, in 1886, Burlington became an incorporated village. At the turn of the 20th century, its status changed to that of a city.
