South Williamsport started as two separate settlements, Bootstown and Rocktown. Encompassing the southern shore of the Susquehanna River, the area was officially incorporated as South Williamsport in 1886. It's larger namesake is across the river to the north, while the boroughs of Armstrong Township and Duboistown border South Williamsport to the east and the west. South of town lies Bald Eagle Mountain. The city is fairly narrow and only fills out 2.1 square miles. The population is estimated at roughly 6,000 and growing. But geography conspires against development in South Williamsport.
Being sandwiched between a river and a mountain means South Williamsport faces limited expansion opportunities. The homes here were built from the early 1900s to the 1980s, but not much else has been built since then. That means you won't find those typically-suburban contemporary architectural styles that are so popular now. Single-family homes dominate this town, so you won't have much luck if you're on an apartment search in South Williamsport for a traditional multi-unit building. You'll be better off looking for a studio apartment for rent in a finished basement or attic. Rental space is limited, so stable work and a positive rental history as well as a month or two worth of rent for a security deposit will go a long way to finding a place quickly.
South Williamsport is divided into three wards so check out the descriptions below to see which one is for you.
First Ward: The first ward consists of the area between Armstrong Township to the east and Market Street to the west. The eastern-most portion of this district is taken up by Little League fields and the museum, but you can also find rental houses here as well. These early 1900s Victorian homes have more an in-town feel, with houses in closer, cozier proximity to each other. Santino's Italian Cuisine on East Southern Avenue is the place to go for pizzeria-style pizza or large portions of homemade pasta and sauces.
Second Ward: The second ward extends from Market Street to Clinton Street. Here you'll find a continuation of the smaller Victorians, as well as ramblers and cape cods. In addition to residential property rentals, much of the cities shopping and restaurants are in the North East corner of this section of town, including a local favorite, the Bridge Tavern
Third Ward: The third ward lies between Clinton Street and the Duboistown border. Here you'll find ranches with larger lots, so this is the part of town where you can stretch your legs out, so to speak. This town loves its baseball, and you will find yet another field in the third ward.
The main attraction in South Williamsport is the Little League World Series complex and the Little League Museum on the far east side of town. For more nature-minded residents, the Susquehanna Riverwalk path offers beautiful scenery and opportunities to view various wildlife including various waterfowl and even coyotes. For a bit of whimsy, the city puts on a smaller version of Philly's Mummer's parade every New Year's that travels through the center of town.
