Great Scott! East Cleveland was founded by Scottish immigrants whose names can still be found in the city to this day, with buildings and streets named after them, such as Eddy and Shaw.

East Cleveland is the first suburb of the city of Cleveland, and it borders Cleveland on the west, north and a small portion of the city's southwestern edge. East Cleveland was officially founded as a village in 1895 and then as a city in 1911 (yay progress!). The charter included provisions for women's suffrage, which around this time just didn't happen with the exception of the West. East Cleveland is also home to the world's first industrial park. Nela Park, constructed by General Electric, is still in use as the company headquarters of GE Lighting.

Millionaire's Row: East Cleveland also contains portions of Euclid Avenue within its borders, which between the years of 1860 to the 1920s was known as Millionaire's Row. Millionaire's Row was also home to oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller and his 248-acre estate. Rockefeller is best known as the world's first billionaire. Although many of the Millionaire's Row homes were destroyed by the Great Depression, there are still 18 of the original homes in East Cleveland, as well as another six in the city of Cleveland itself.

Forest Hills: This area comprises the southern part of East Cleveland. Its main attraction is a large park -- Forest Hills Park. Included in 248-acre Forest Hill Park's attractions are three baseball diamonds, walking trails and tennis courts. The park was donated by Rockefeller, and it is still being used as green space as intended by the tycoon.

Living in East Cleveland

Getting around East Cleveland is pretty simple, largely due to the fact that East Cleveland is home to Greater Cleveland Rapid Transit Authority's Windermere Rapid Station. It's also a major hub for GCRTA, with over 80 of the bus routes either originating or terminating in East Cleveland. Using the Rapid, commuters have access to downtown Cleveland through Tower City, Cleveland State University, Edgewater Park, or Hopkins International Airport. By using buses, commuters have an even greater reach available to them, extending even into the outer suburbs.
