Moving to North Valley

Getting Around

I-25 (Pan-American Freeway) and I-40 are easily accessible from the North Valley. The old Route 66 passed through Albuquerque, and a drive down Central Avenue will take you past historic motels and diners. The ABQ Ride bus network connects North Valley with the rest of Albuquerque. The New Mexico Rail Runner commuter rail stops at Montano Transit Center in the North Valley and offers seven northbound and southbound trains every weekday. Saturday and Sunday service are also available. Amtrak trains stop in downtown Albuquerque.

Apartments

There are a variety of apartments for rent in North Valley, but how do you find one that fits your needs? North Valley has many opportunities for relocation, but a little bit of prep can make it simpler to find the right apartment for you.

Think about your needs and budget. Would you be happy living in any of the studio apartments for rent, or are you looking for something larger? If you want more space, you might want to consider rental houses or duplexes for rent. Also consider how long you'd like to live in a place. Would you be comfortable with signing a yearlong lease, or do you want the flexibility of going month to month?

You'll want to collect paperwork in advance so you can act fast when you see a place you like. Most landlords will want to see photo ID and a letter of employment (and many will ask for bank statements and pay stubs). A credit and / or background check may also be required.

Neighborhoods

What do you look for in a neighborhood? Restaurants? Shopping? Check out the list below to see what's available in North Valley.

Fourth Street NW and Rio Grande NW: This area is home to many shops and restaurants offering diverse cuisines. Book lovers will appreciate Bookworks, an independent bookstore that hosts author readings and other events for readers of all ages.

Merritt Acres: With a more suburban flair, this area is larger than most neighborhoods in North Valley. Commuting times from here run 20 minutes on average, and more people rent than own.

Living in North Valley
Albuquerque's desert climate averages about 310 sunny days per year. Winters are mild and precipitation is rare, except during monsoon season (generally June-August). Summer temperatures can reach the triple digits during the day. Sunscreen and hats are essential.

The Rio Grande Nature Center State Park offers excellent bird-watching and hiking opportunities. Across the Rio Grande, Petroglyph National Monument features rock carvings made by Native Americans and Spanish settlers. The North Valley offers great views of the Sandia Mountains, named for the pink color they turn at sunset. Take the tram to the top of Sandia Peak for stunning views of the city and hiking trails.

North Valley is also near Balloon Fiesta Park, site of the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, the largest hot-air balloon festival in the world.

The Unser Museum of Racing on Montano Road showcases racing highlights and historic cars used by members of the famous Unser family. Visitors can go on guided tours and use racing simulators to put themselves in the driver's seat. The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center hosts exhibitions and special events.
