City Guide for Conway, SC

Welcome to Conway! Your new South Carolina city is quickly transforming from a small river town to a thriving coastal community. Let’s take a look at some apartments for rent and find you the home of your dreams.

Conway is located in eastern South Carolina, about 15 miles from Myrtle Beach. Because of the large population increase in Myrtle Beach, expansion westward has joined the tourist community.

Not all Conway residents see their city as a suburb of Myrtle Beach, and with good reason! Conway is one of the oldest communities in the state, and recent renovation has preserved a large portion of this town’s rich history. The historic downtown Riverwalk has some unique shops and restaurants, while new development on the outskirts of town have made shopping and dining convenient.

The city is also home to two institutes of higher education—the Horry-Georgetown Technical College and Coastal Carolina University. Together these schools educate about 13,000 students annually, while keeping the city young and the real estate market diverse.

Unfortunately, not everything is peaches and cream in Conway. Rapid development and population growth have left the city highly stratified with certain more desirable areas catering to a wealthier clientele and others left with high crime rates and disrepair. However, a diverse body of apartment rentals and brand new construction mean that you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding cheap apartments within great areas. When you begin your apartment hunt, allow yourself plenty of time to determine which neighborhoods are right for you.

By and large, the safest, most desirable apartment rentals in town are located to the southeast of the city center, on the road to Myrtle Beach. Both Horry-Georgetown and Coastal Carolina’s campuses are located here, so that means that there is a wide variety of options in this region—including studio apartments, furnished apartments for rent, and rentals with short term leases. There are also several condominium and townhome developments that are more welcoming to the professional or family. Two bedrooms here range from $400 to $550 for student-type housing and $800 to $1000 for more upscale rentals.

You’ll find some great rental homes scattered throughout many of Conway’s more desirable, family-oriented neighborhoods. A good general rule of thumb when checking out rental homes in Conway is to stay as far east of the city center as possible. While there are some great pockets of neighborhoods to the north and west of town, these areas generally have higher crime ratings. Two bedroom homes in Conway range from $750 to $950.

If you’re relocating to Conway with a four-legged friend, allow yourself plenty of time to find a desirable pet-friendly rental. Cat and dog-friendly apartments throughout town can be difficult to find. But with enough time (and money for a pet deposit!) you should be able to find a great home for you and Fido or Fluffy.

So welcome to Conway! Enjoy all that this growing coastal community has to offer! See more

What to keep in mind when looking for apartments with parking in Conway, SC

Parking can be at a premium in some cities where spaces are challenging to find. Some Conway apartments offer parking options, either outside in a common area or within a private garage.

Ask about the stipulations around the parking. Those may include how many guests are allowed and where tenants park.

Some apartments may only allow parking in front of your own unit. Guest parking may be in a common area for up to one person.

If parking is scarce, look around the area before you sign a lease. Ample street parking in a neighborhood championed for its safety is probably fine. However, it’s probably not worth signing a lease if it means battling for daily parking for you and your guests.

Research whether you need a city permit to park in the neighborhood. Look into the associated costs and what to do about visitors who need parking.

Some tenants prefer garage parking near their units. However, an open-air lot may prove cheaper.

Keep in mind that the cost of wear and tear from parking outside can add up. It may be less expensive, in the long run, to look for an apartment with garage parking.
