Lewisburg is a borough located in Union County, Pennsylvania. The borough is the county seat of Union County and is the principal city in the Lewisburg Metropolitan statistical area. The town is located 60 miles north of Harrisburg and 30 miles southeast of Williamsport. The most recent census of the area indicates that the population is slightly less than 6,000 people. Nineteenth century downtown Lewisburg was recently placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town was founded in 1784 by area settler, Ludwig Derr who purchased several tracts of land from the William Penn family and a few other neighboring landowners. Derr was a savvy businessman who befriended local Native Americans. This networking strategy benefited the fledgling borough, allowing the area to gain a foothold on prosperity while neighboring areas were ransacked by pillaging natives. The area was originally named Derrstown, but the name was changed to Lewisburg, an Americanized version of the town founder's first name, after its founder's death.
