New Ulm, MN, is one of those towns that many people think have gone the way of the dodo, where neighbors are still, well, neighborly and community spirit course through the place. Although the city only has a population of 13,522 (according to the 2010 census), there's plenty for residents and activities to see and do throughout the year.
Renting in New Ulm
Looking for a home for rent in New Ulm shouldn't be too much of a difficult task. You'll often need to pay a month's rent upfront, plus a security deposit of a roughly equal amount, so obviously it will cost you less to move into a studio apartment for rent than a three-story townhouse.
New Ulm Neighborhoods
The neighborhood you move into in New Ulm will probably depend on your needs and preferences. Some are older than others or have larger homes, and others may be closer to amenities or more convenient for travel to other areas.
Courtland: This neighborhood is home to a lot of historic properties, built prior to 1940. The majority of properties are medium or large houses, but there are some rental apartments in the area.
City Center: In the city center, you'll be close to the main shops and restaurants that New Ulm has to offer. However, what you gain in convenience, you lose in space, as properties are generally built on smaller plots.
German Street: This neighborhood has a decent mix of apartments and houses. Properties are mostly on the smaller side. Taco John's and Veigel's Kaiserhoff are located in this area.
Life in New Ulm
As home to the August Schell Brewing Company, which makes German-style lagers, New Ulm takes its beer and its German heritage seriously. An annual Oktoberfest is held over the first two weekends of October and always has the makings of a good time. However, this isn't the only event on the calendar -- you'll also be able to attend other events, including Fasching and Schell's Bock Fest, Bavarian Blast and Riverblast. There are a range of great attractions in the town, such as the 105-foot Hermann Monument, which you can climb for stunning views over the city, or the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, built in German baroque style. The Minnesota Music Hall of Fame is found in New Ulm; Prince and Bob Dylan are among the 100 current members, but a ceremony for new inductees is held yearly on the first Friday of November.
