The city of Ellsworth has a long history. The area on which it now stands was originally inhabited by peoples of the Passamaquoddy and Penobscot tribes. It was later inhabited by early French settlers in the early 1600s. However, its modern history began in the mid-1700s, when it was inhabited by a party led by Benjamin Milliken and Benjamin Joy.

Although not a huge town by any means (it had a population of 7,741 at the 2010 census), Ellsworth appears to be growing fast, with a growth rate of nearly 20 percent between 2000 and 2010. Its historical buildings and various points of interest makes Ellsworth popular with locals and tourists alike.

Neighborhoods in Ellsworth

You'll find all sorts of places to live in Ellsworth, but the type of property you're looking for will probably dictate which neighborhood you want to live in. Some areas will primarily contain particular types of homes, so do your research before you decide which neighborhoods interest you.

City Center: If you want to be close to the action (or what passes for action in Ellsworth at least), this is where to live. You'll be near a range of shops from the Art Song Gallery to the Friends and Family Market. You'll find mostly apartment complexes and some townhouses in this area. There are a good number of historic buildings.

North Ellsworth: Surrounded by lakes and open spaces, this neighborhood has a rural appeal. You'll share the area with Branch Lake and parts of Green Lake and Graham Lake. You'll mostly find medium-sized and large houses in this area.

Surry: Although not far from the center of town, you'll have to traverse a channel of Graham Lake to get there (don't worry, there's a bridge!). There's a mixture of houses and apartment complexes in this area. You'll find a number of things to do in the area, such as visit the Woodlawn Museum or grab a bite at the Cookie Nook Bakery.

Living in Ellsworth

There's plenty in Ellsworth to keep you busy, no matter your interests. There's no shortage of lakes in Ellsworth, so it's the ideal place if you're into boating or water sports. If you're interested in wildlife, try visiting the Stanwood Homestead Museum and Bird Sanctuary. The museum's a little outdated, but located in a beautiful building. Besides, most people come for the birds and to hike the trails around the museum. If history's your thing, you have to take a trip to the Woodlawn Museum. The main house is known as The Black House and was built in the 1820s in Federal style. The museum's park and formal gardens are also gorgeous places to spend the day.
